We are honored to announce our collaboration in hosting Professor Jala Makhzoumi, distinguished international scholar renowned for her contributions to landscape architecture and ecosystem management education. Professor Makhzoumi's work encompasses a comprehensive approach that harmonizes community interests with the preservation of ecosystem health, biodiversity, and cultural heritage. Her professional portfolio includes expertise in sustainable urban greening, post-disaster recovery, and the conservation of landscape heritage, informed by her research on the Right to Landscape, ecological landscape associations, and region-specific practices in the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern areas.

This event will be jointly organized by the MArch Programme at the Salford Laboratory of Architecture (S-LAB) and the MLA Programme at the Manchester School of Architecture (MSA), supported by funding from Research England and the MSA.

Exploring Global Perspectives: MLA 1 students at Manchester School of Architecture presented their insights on landscape precedent studies from around the world keeping in spirit of the ‘Go Global Week’ at Manchester School of Architecture. These presentations delved into various policies, practices, and global paradigms, focusing on how they inform the design principles shaping designed and managed landscapes across the world.

Our Year 1 Landscape Students visited the sculpture sanctuary at Crosby Beach!! What a captivating and contemplative experience with 100 life-sized iron sculptures by Antony Gormley, positioned at various points along the coastline. The statues, facing the sea and embedded in the sand, created a dynamic and ever-changing landscape with the tides! The interaction between the art, the rhythmic sounds of the waves, and the scenic beauty of the beach created a unique, memorable, and thought-provoking experience.

A special thank you to the dedicated faculty members who worked tirelessly to organize and facilitate the trip and to the students for their active participation and engagement.

The rains couldn’t stop us!!!

Master of Landscape students visited the historic Birkenhead Park, now on UK’s tentative List for the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Designed by Sir Joseph Paxton and opened in 1847, this Victorian park is considered one of the world's first publicly funded parks. The park's design is inspired by English and French landscape styles and was the original inspiration for Olmstead’s designs for the Central Park New York!

A big shout out to Marie Le Devehat, World Heritage Project Officer for Birkenhead Park, for the amazing presentation and the serene yet enriching tour of the park.

A glimpse into the recently concluded Master of Landscape Architecture and Architecture Research Methods Workshop exhibition held at the Manchester School of Architecture in January.

The exhibition featured work developed over a semester-long unit, exploring a diverse range of sites and research methods.
The outputs demonstrated methodological and conceptual explorations that reflected a symbiosis between design practice, history, and theory and allowed for scholarship to be placed within a deeper understanding of landscape architecture and architecture as a whole.

We are delighted to announce the inaugural MLA dissertation award at the Manchester School of Architecture (MSA) sponsored by Gillespies, UK. Treicy Javiera Isamit Leteliier's winning dissertation, "Meaning of the Ground: Compose the Ground through Memory," delves into the response of landscape designers to unpredictable situations posed by spontaneous memorials, altering the significance of public spaces. Ankita Rani, the runner-up, contributed a compelling dissertation titled "A case of the Yamuna River in Delhi, India," examining the role of landscape architects in redefining an eco-theological entanglement.

Jim Gibson and Chris Wong, Gillespies Manchester studio, participated in the online ceremony to present the award for the best dissertation.

Heartfelt congratulations to Treicy and Ankita, as well as all participants in the MLA at Manchester School of Architecture.

In our first session of the year MLA1 and MLA2 drew portraits of each other using a technique from the classic book ‘Experimental Drawing’ by Robert Kaupelis. The method involves drawing a portrait in less than 2 minutes without looking at the page while you’re drawing. The trick, according to Kaupelis, is to *imagine* your pencil touching the subject’s face as you draw. MLA students - If you think you recognise the artist or subject - please tag them!

Recent MLA graduate Beth Houston has been awarded the ‘Outstanding Masters Student’ from the European Council of Landscape Architecture Schools 2022. Beth’s award was announced at the ECLAS conference at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia earlier this week.

MSA Live 2022 is the latest Manchester School of Architecture’s annual programme of student-led live projects.
Each year the MSA LIVE (formerly Events) programme unites Master of Architecture year 1 with BA (Hons) Architecture years 1 and 2 and Master of Landscape Architecture year 1 students in mixed-year teams to undertake live projects with external partners to create social impact.
We are excited to share the outputs of this year’s MSA Live projects over several posts. You can find more details about each project by clicking on the link in our bio.

Group 32 ‘SenStory’
Project Description:
SenStory will design an accessible sensory garden that reflects the diversity and multi-generational community of Manchester. The garden will include the opportunity to explore different scents, smells, textures, shapes, colour and tastes - sensory stimulation which is critical to healthy brain development. A place to get away from it all, where time stops and demands on life are temporarily non-existent. The community will be invited into the garden to be able to work in partnership with Martenscroft Nursery School in developing their own and their children’s awareness and respect for nature and the climate. SenStory will design a garden for children of all abilities to learn through heightening their senses through peers and supportive adults. Using the resources of the garden means different things to different children, a place where it is alright to make mistakes or practice skills in a secure and supportive environment.
