The art of topiary. 🌿

There’s something satisfying about a perfectly shaped piece of topiary.

But keeping that shape takes regular care, a good eye and a steady hand.

Whether it’s a simple sphere or a more defined pyramid, clipped forms can bring rhythm, structure and a sense of permanence to a garden.

The key is knowing when to prune, how much to take off and, perhaps most importantly, when to stop.

Good topiary should look intentional — but never overworked.

A little time by the sea. 🌊

We always find it hard to switch off completely when there are plants to notice.

The coast is full of beautiful examples of plants working with their surroundings — adapting to wind, salt, poor soils and changing conditions.

There is so much to learn from plants growing naturally: the way they move, repeat, group together and respond to the landscape around them.

And, of course, a beach walk with Matt and the dogs is never a bad way to spend a day.

Sometimes inspiration comes when you’re not looking for it. 🌿

Seeing a garden before it’s built. 🌿

A planting plan tells us where everything goes.

A 3D visualisation helps us understand how the whole space will feel.

For smaller gardens, where every element matters, being able to see the proportions, planting, materials and views together can be incredibly useful.

It’s another way of turning an idea on paper into something you can actually imagine living with.

Rocks can do much more than just fill a space. 🪨🌿

In garden design, we use them to bring weight, structure and a sense of permanence to a planting scheme.

They create contrast too — the solidity of stone against soft foliage, movement and seasonal colour.

A well-placed rock can help anchor a planting area, guide the eye through the garden and make the surrounding plants feel even more natural.

For us, it’s about finding the right stone, in the right place, and making it feel as though it belongs there.

A garden starts long before the first plant goes in.

We begin with ideas — how the space should feel, how people will use it and how the planting will work throughout the seasons.

Then we turn those ideas into a concept and planting plan.

This is where the vision starts to become real.

Structure and softness 🌿

Topiary can bring a strong sense of structure to a garden — creating rhythm, shape and focal points that hold the planting together.

We love the contrast between these sculptural forms and the softer, more natural planting around them. The structure gives the garden a framework, while the flowers and grasses bring movement and seasonal change.

It’s often the balance between the two that makes a garden feel considered, rather than overly formal.

People Behind Green Spaces — Magda

While Matt is often the one you’ll find outside, bringing gardens to life, I’m usually found somewhere between the garden and the drawing board.

I work on the design side of Green Spaces — developing ideas, working through planting, materials and details, and trying to bring all the different elements of a garden together.

A lot of the work happens away from the finished garden: looking, drawing, researching, changing things, and looking again.

It’s a part of the process I really enjoy.

And that’s a little glimpse of the person behind the plans. 🌿

Looking for inspiration beyond our own gardens.

Some time ago we visited the Lost Gardens of Heligan, and as garden designers, we love seeing how other gardens handle colour, texture and seasonal change.

Late summer was particularly beautiful — from bold Rudbeckias and Heleniums to softer, more layered planting around the dahlias.

It’s a good reminder that inspiration doesn’t always come from a plan or a planting list. Sometimes it comes simply from walking through a garden and noticing what makes a combination work.

It’s often the small details that make a planting scheme work.

A closer look at Hydrangea aspera in a garden we’re managing.

From a distance, it’s part of the wider planting. But look closer and you start to notice the finer details — the delicate flowers, the colour, the texture and the way it sits amongst the surrounding plants.

These are the details we enjoy coming back to as a garden develops.

A garden doesn’t have to be shouting to be interesting.

Not every plant makes it into a garden.

When we’re choosing plants for a project, we’re looking beyond how good they look in the nursery.

We think about scale, shape, seasonality, colour, texture — and how the plant will work alongside everything else around it.

Sometimes it’s a particular tree that catches your eye.

Like this Acer.

Beautiful foliage, an elegant form and enough presence to become a real feature in the garden.

A good plant nursery is an important part of that process, and we always enjoy visiting Botanica Plant Centre to see what’s looking good and choose the right plants for each project.

Plant selection is a big part of creating a garden that feels considered rather than simply filled.

And sometimes, the best part of the job is finding the right plant.
