A few weeks ago we welcomed staff from the Mitcheldean office of United Healthcare Global, to one of our restock sites in the Forest of Dean.

As part of their , they were keen to come and learn about how we manage woodland for a variety of needs such as biodiversity through to timber production. Learning more about the local area and how our work is interlinked with the wider Forestry programme in the UK.

Once the questions had been exhausted, they got to have a go at planting some Scots Pine, learning how trees are planted correctly to give them the best chance of thriving.

It was really good to have representatives from a different industry and answer their questions about the local area and how forestry is managed both locally and on a national scale.

Many thanks to James Williams from Forestry England for giving his time and expertise.

Little photo of the latest to come out of R Dad studios - egg cups made from a yew branch I had to cut out of the way in a thinning I was in about 2007. Nothing is wasted!
All natural, just a little bit of wax to bring out the colour.

Tree safety works in the Forest of Dean today for Forestry England.
Felling ropey trees close to public rights of way. This one looked really rotten so we spent a good chuck of time assessing, planning escape routes etc and it turned out to be completely solid 😂
Still better that than the other way round.
(Just washed land rover too. She looks mint 👌)

Due to an increased workload we are looking to fill the following positions;

Forestry operator - must hold 1st aid (+F), brushcutter and spraying (PA1 & PA6) certificates. Chainsaw certificates would be desirable. Must be physically fit, punctual and hard working.

Apprentice - we would be keen to hear from any school leavers who have an interest in a career outdoors and feel an apprenticeship at a progressive forestry company would be an ideal way into the world of work.

We are based in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire and do a wide range of forestry establishment and conservation work. Please have a look at our website www.kilmaha.co.uk for further details of what we get up to.

If any of these positions are of interest, get in contact we'd love to hear from you!

Couple of photos of a site I'm really pleased with in North Herefordshire. We planted this 2 1/2 years ago with Douglas fir, western red cedar and Dawn redwood and it has established really well with some good targeted maintenance; spot spraying early on, brushcutting the bramble at the edge of the brashrakes and, yesterday, cutting the broom and gorse that had begun to emerge. Doing these things early has resulted in a well established crop there is no substitute for good silvicultural practice!

Look closely and you can see the lesser-spotted Bevan in its natural habitat - up to his eyeballs in weeds
