The main part of our job is to expect the unexpected. When we removed the plaster from this clients wall recently, it was clear that the original wooden lintel was rotten and had completely broken down.

Why would you use wood for a lintel as it will rot?

In older brick houses, wooden lintels were commonly used to support the brickwork above an opening such as a window or door. They often used timber because it was readily available and easy to work with, as time progressed, they moved on to use stone, concrete or steel as it doesn't break down so easily.

What does a lintel do?

A lintel is essentially a horizontal beam spanning the opening. The brickwork above it puts downward load onto the lintel, the lintel then transfers that load sideways into the brickwork at either side of the opening. This prevents the bricks above the opening from simply falling into the opening.

They serve a very important purpose in our homes!

Do you remember a couple of weeks ago we had a client with a leaking roof? We had hoped it was a simple fix but sadly, it was fully rotten through and required a rebuild. The lads did a great job and we received a message from our happy customer saying "Ryan and Bailey have done such a good job with the roof replacement, such lovely guys".

We always pass on the positive feedback to our staff as it's important they feel valued and motivated in the job. Well done both!

Whilst we have been enjoying the most wonderful summer, it sadly won't be long until the colder, wetter and darker days return. With this can come condensation mould, which thrives in the autumn and winter. If you know this is going to affect you already, make sure you give our team a call. We will identify the root cause, treat the area(s) with specialist products and apply preventative solutions to stop it returning.

What is a remedial survey?
A remedial survey is carried out when an issue(s) has been identified such as damp, timber decay, structural defects or other building problems. The survey looks at the cause of the issue(s), the extent of the damage and what remedial work is needed to put it right.

Why should we have a remedial survey?

It identifies the root cause allowing treatment to stop it from spreading.

It protects your property, finding and addressing problems early can help prevent further damage.

It can save money, understanding exactly what work is required helps avoid unnecessary or ineffective repairs.

A remedial survey isn't just about fixing what's visible, it's about understanding why the problem has occurred and how to resolve it properly.

We provide remedial surveys across Gloucestershire, Monmouthshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. For a no obligation chat to find out more, give us a call or send us a WhatsApp on 07786 402850.

Any other tradespeople feel like you spend far too much time in the garage? Making sure our vans are roadworthy is scheduled into the diary regularly and last week it was new tyres needed. Really pleased with the signwriting too! Have you seen any of our vans out and about?

That looks a little different.....what is it?

Our latest project has involved us stripping down some internal walls and we came across this. Instead of your standard timber stud wall, this is wood lath with plaster. It is very typical of older buildings (late 1800s to mid-1900s), exactly what we're working on.

The horizontal timber strips are wood laths, these are nailed to the wall framing. The grey material squeezed through the gaps are the "keys" of the original lime or gypsum plaster. When the plaster is applied, it pushes through the gaps and hardened behind the laths. This in turn locks the plaster to the wall. A very clever way of building and can be very long lasting!

What a Friday! The lesson being you never know what you're going to find........

The client said the roof had been leaking slightly. The hope was to recover the roof and reseal it for them. Sadly, it was very clear very quickly that the roof is completely rotten and requires a total strip down and re-build. Well done guys for tackling this one!
