🌱 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗚𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 🌱

January gardens in Essex often struggle more with waterlogging than cold.

Persistent rain, heavy clay soils and low winter evaporation can leave lawns and borders saturated, which limits oxygen around roots and slows recovery in spring.

What helps at this time of year:
• Stay off lawns where possible — walking on wet grass compacts soil and makes drainage worse
• Clear leaves and debris from lawns, borders and drains so water can move freely
• Avoid feeding lawns or plants now; nutrients won’t be absorbed and may wash away
• Check pots and containers are raised slightly so excess water can escape
• Accept surface moss for now — it thrives in damp, low-light conditions and is best dealt with in spring

Healthy winter gardens are often the ones that are left alone until soils begin to dry and warm.

🌱 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗚𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 🌱

Snow can actually help your garden — but what you do after it melts matters far more.

Following snow and hard frost:
• Avoid walking on frozen or waterlogged lawns, as this compresses soil and damages grass crowns
• Don’t rush to tidy frost-damaged plants — the damaged growth protects healthy tissue underneath
• Check drains, borders and low spots for standing water, which can suffocate roots
• Shake heavy snow from shrubs and evergreens to prevent snapping

Once temperatures lift, lawns and plants usually recover on their own if they’ve been left undisturbed.

Winter damage is often caused by pressure and interference, not cold itself.

Customer photo! 📸

We were asked by Sam & Sallie to help with their lawn last year, as is commonly the case on new builds, their grass was patchy, the soil contained everything and anything but soil, and the water from the lawn flooded the patio regularly.

We took the old turf up, replaced the top 4 inches of soil and installed a french drain to help with the water!

Fast forward a year and we’ve been sent this update picture, the turf has taken as we’d wished and is thriving!
