Yet, there is a persistent, false narrative spread by critics of synthetic turf that artificial grass increases the risk of surface water flooding. The claim is that laying artificial grass is like paving over your garden with plastic, leaving rainwater nowhere to go.

It is time to set the record straight. The truth is that a correctly installed, SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) compliant artificial lawn actually performs better than a natural lawn when it comes to managing heavy rainfall and preventing surface water runoff.

Here is the science behind why.

The Natural Turf Problem: Wet, Dry, and Baked Solid

To understand drainage, we have to look at how natural soil and turf absorb water under different conditions. Natural soil is highly variable, and its ability to absorb water changes drastically depending on the weather:

When Wet (Winter/Spring):

During periods of prolonged rain, natural soil becomes entirely saturated. The water table rises, the ground becomes a boggy mess, and the soil simply cannot take on any more water. Any additional rainfall pools on the surface and runs off.

When Dry (Summer): Healthy, moderately dry soil has a decent absorption rate, taking in water steadily.

Beneath the grass is a carefully compacted aggregate sub-base (typically a layer of MOT Type 1 or granite dust over a larger stone base). This deep sub-base acts as an attenuation layer. It holds massive volumes of rainwater within the voids between the aggregate stones, temporarily storing it away from the surface.

Slow release into the ground:

Once the water is safely retained in the porous sub-base, it is slowly and naturally released back into the earth below at a manageable rate, completely preventing rapid surface runoff.

Because of this system of rapid absorption, deep retention, and slow release, a professionally installed artificial lawn is fully SuDS compliant. It mimics natural drainage and actively mitigates the flash-flooding risks associated with baked, hydrophobic summer soils and waterlogged winter mud.
