Stumbled on a little trick today while morticing some dense Hardwood. It was more the fear of burning out the chisel as it was hotting up a little. I nudged the chisel in about 1/8 to get a reference. Then in the 1/2 Mortice I bore in with a 3/8 auger on my cordless. Just enough to ease the pressure from the Mortice chisel, and my right arm!.

If someone had said to the 20yr old me that In my mid 50s I’d be choosing cutting big tenons by hand, over machines or power tools, I’d be laughing at them…… but a shift happens where the enjoyment and rewards from process, far out way the end result, and the pay cheque. The tang of the hammer on oak wedged tenon, the squelch of the glue when the cramps are tightened. Suddenly the small things become as rewarding as the end product? Didn’t see this coming 😉

Shop made Jig made for this new little bit of kit I just purchased. A UJK drill guide, now has an extended base. Im really pleased with it. Perfect on this project, drilling out little mortises for some spindle inserts for Garden gate I’m making. Initially bought for a handrail job I have coming off….. But thought I’d try it out and have a practice.

Last week was an interesting week at work. For a while I’ve been toying with a reverting to a simpler, greener and possibly a more enjoyable method of working. Much to my surprise, as much as it shouldn’t be, a very productive way too. Working on noisy industrial woodworking machines for many years now, the pull towards reverting back to hand tools has been something I’ve been itching to do. I have 3 sets of hardwood garden gates to make and thought I’d make a start. I have a vintage Sorby Rip Saw that I’d sharpened especially (that’s a dying art in itself) a recently purchased Veritas rip tenon saw, and a Japanese pull saw. For the 8”tenons the Sorby was the winner, for the 4” it was the Back Saw. The pull saw was ok, but not for me. Anyways, without the machine set up time, Noise, dust, etc this was not a slow process once I was moving, an enjoyable and rewarding way of working too. Tenons all pretty good from the saw and only a tickle up with the block plane required. For small projects it’ll now be the way forward for me.

Paid a visit to some long term customers today to see some future works that they are planning. Was nice to see these pieces of bedroom furniture standing the test of time, I made them 5 years ago and they still look as fresh as the day they were fit. The carcasses are Baltic Birch ply sprayed satin white, frames and draw boxes Poplar, hand painted with Farrow & Ball. Was a lovely project to work on. The little ottoman was fun to make. I remember making all 7 draw boxes with finger joints cut on the table saw. Let’s say I was pleased when that bit was completed ha.

A lot of splicing this week repairing two sets of Coach House Doors in a Tallentire. Sometimes there is more satisfaction repairing things like this than replacing. As much as I like making new fitments it’s always nice to bring things back, cheaper to the customer too. All these boards were reverse mitred from the face of the doors so no water will pe*****te the end grain. I also dry cut these and soaked them in a bucket of preservative for 24hrs. First coat of stain applied and starting to take shape.

A Design born from a Dorma Window barge board I had previously replaced. I kept the template for a router jig and thought of another use for it. The wood is Elm, also left over from restoration job on a water wheel possibly 25 ago.

Nostalgia. I was given this Photo today of me and my Dad working on a roof in 1987. I was 17yr old. Gone is the jet black box cut (wanted to look like Suggs off Madness) replaced now with a Grey crop, sporting a small Solar Panel ha ha ……. A traditional roof, looks like we’re cutting the Spars. Not much in the way of safety as I remember. No scaffold or air bags like today.
I do see a lift of quick form, probably the builders, can’t see it being much use to us where it is. My safety training from my old fella was, if you gonna fall, fall inside onto the ceiling joist, or possibly a planked trestle, they’ll break your fall? Flipping heck imagine that today, two sometime three storeys up, walking along the wall plate, carrying a length of 6x2 with a mouth full of four inch nails. Change of underwear often required. I’m betting those saw horses are still in the workshop today, probably had half a dozen new tops on them, new legs, feet etc, just like triggers brush,🤣
