We had a few site visits this week and we are glad to see this project heading towards completion.

A few favourite details coming to life this week:

Vaulted ceiling heights and apex glazing pulling natural light right through the floor plan.
Locally sourced natural stonework grounding clean render lines and timber cladding.
A bespoke steel balustrade paired with oak, creating a sculptural focal point in the central hall.
The monolithic marble waterfall island anchoring the open-plan kitchen and living space.
Seeing bespoke details transition from technical drawings to physical craft is always the best part of the job.

Perched on a hillside overlooking the glorious Dee Valley and with backdrop of Moel Morfydd is Bryn Awel, a daring replacement dwelling that blends the vernacular material palette, the rural setting and the contemporary aesthetics into an architecture that exudes quality in every line. It's no secret that designing on dramatically sloping sites can be a tricky prospect however, it is undoubtedly worth the hard work when you can have views like those enjoyed by Bryn Awel. When combined with the clients' unique aesthetic sensibilities, we find that there is the opportunity the achieve something special.

We're extremely excited about this project and we look forward to starting on site.

Balancing sleek contemporary architecture with a rustic cottage aesthetic.

We're very pleased to have crafted this design through close collaboration with our clients in the inaugural project of our new Cheshire Studio. Faced with the challenging prospect of taking a traditional cottage with a long history of various extensions, we were asked to pull together the disparate elements.

The architecture introduces sharp lines and contemporary forms into the existing building without compromising its innate charm. There is a very clear concept of connecting the inside and out both visually and physically. Positioned with views towards the surrounding countryside, the design ensures that there is a view through and out from the moment you step inside. The spaces are designed to open out into the garden directly through the expansive Crittall doors or by graduating out under the covered outdoor lounge complete with dual-aspect fire.

We think that the design walks the line of exuding quality in its new elements whilst accentuating the rustic feel of the retained fabric. This project is now in planning, but we're hoping to see it on site before too long.

Site visit today.

From forgotten stone walls and weathered rafters to one of the most incredible coastal outlooks in Rhoscolyn. ​Ruins to some perhaps; but absolute architectural gold to us as we walked around. The potential here to create a seamless blend of heritage stonework and contemporary coastal living is huge.

Precedent Research today before a meeting next week.

A bold, biomimetic shell plugged directly into the side of a Grade II* Victorian Gothic manor. It doesn’t try to mimic the stone or apologise for being modern - it attaches like a living organism, completely contrasting the host while bringing modern energy and purpose to it.

Out on site research today, studying the form, junctions, and detailing at Plas Glyn-y-Weddw ahead of an exciting new collaborative art/cafe project.

When pure sculpture meets habitable space, this is the benchmark. More soon.

Often when removing old cement render from stone walls you find past modifications. Sometimes these can be tragic and sometimes a welcome surprise...in this case the latter. The current 1200x870mm is not the original size as can be noted from the brick infill under the window.

During the 1700s, window openings were often square or slightly taller than they were wide. A 1200 x 1200 opening would have likely housed a timber casement window (the kind that swings out) divided by a central vertical post called a mullion. This would create two tall, narrow glass areas, which was the standard "look" of the period.

This is a great find and we will be returning the window back to it's original proportions.
