🔌 One of the biggest mistakes I see in new kitchens is simply not having enough sockets, now, I get that people want a clean finish on their walls and there are options!

Most people think about where the kettle and toaster will go, but modern kitchens often have a lot more plugged in than that:

🍞 Toaster
🥤 Air fryer
🔋 Phone chargers
🤖 Robot vacuum docks
📱 Tablets and smart displays

One feature that's becoming increasingly popular is an **appliance garage**.

If you've not come across one before, it's a dedicated area designed to hide away things that may look cluttered like coffee machines, toasters, kettles and all the sockets that go with it.

They look fantastic, reduce clutter and help keep worktops and walls clear.

I've seen appliance garages with no sockets inside, or just a single socket that quickly becomes overloaded with extension leads.

If you're planning a new kitchen, take some time and really think about how you'll actually use the space day to day. A few extra sockets during the design stage can save a lot of frustration later on.

After all, nobody has ever finished a kitchen project and said:

"I wish I'd installed fewer sockets." 😅

As an option for a cleaner finish on the walls, you could opt for pop-up sockets mounted in the worktop. I'm personally not a fan but they are an option.

💡 Kitchen Lighting Mistake: Relying Only on Downlights

Downlights have their place, but they shouldn't be the only source of light in your kitchen. I've got them in my kitchen, but I also have 5 other ways of lighting the room. Overkill? Yeah maybe, but....

One of the biggest design mistakes I see is a kitchen filled with bright ceiling lights and nothing else.

It can leave the room feeling flat, clinical and lacking any character.

A well-designed kitchen should combine different types of lighting:

🔨 Task lighting for food preparation and cooking. - Under cabinet lights
✨ Ambient lighting to create warmth and atmosphere - Discreet LED tape
🎯 Feature lighting to highlight key design elements - Nice picture or wall lights

The LED shelf lighting in this photo is a great example of ambient lighting. It adds depth, creates a softer feel in the evening and helps the kitchen feel more inviting.

Think about how you actually use your kitchen.

At 7pm, when you're enjoying a glass of wine or chatting with family, you probably don't want every downlight blazing away overhead. 🍷

Layered lighting gives you options and helps transform a kitchen from a practical workspace into a space you genuinely enjoy spending time in.
