Electrical jargon can make a simple problem sound far more complicated and confusing to a non-technical person.

Earth leakage, RCDs, MCB circuits, fault currents, loop impedance, and about a million other acronyms.

In my opinion, homeowners don’t need a lesson in electrical terminology. They need to know what the problem means and what to do next.

That’s why I’ve put together some jargon-free Help Sheets on my website, covering common electrical issues in plain English.

Visit https://www.wattcoelectrical.co.uk/helpsheets and take a look at the Help Sheets section.

After making contact with Haydon, regarding my requirements, he offered a quote the following day and we agreed a date for the work to be undertaken. Haydon turned up when he said he would. The work was undertaken in the timeframe he said it would be. The area was cleaned and vacuumed and it was like he had never been. The only difference was that I have light after 18 months and can now decorate!!

When does electrical work need a certificate?

Generally, if extra wiring has been installed, such as adding a new socket next to an existing one, the circuit should be tested and a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate issued. (Your RCD protection may also need upgrading, depending on the existing installation.)

Typically for 'maintenance' jobs and small jobs like installing cookers, replacing lights and sockets etc then a certificate isn't required.

A simple request for a couple of extra sockets recently turned into something more serious.

During testing before the alterations, I uncovered some cross connections on the circuit. The connections meant the circuit was not in a suitable condition to be extended, so I had to reluctantly stop that part of the job and explained the problem to the homeowner.

A bit of testing indicated that the fault is likely in the kitchen, being the newest part of the property I would imagine a kitchen fitter who 'knows electrics' did the work and buried a dodgy joint behind the tiles

This is a good example of why electrical work should be carried out by a registered electrician who can inspect, test and certify the work where required.

If you are planning a new kitchen I highly recommend the guys below.

We asked Haydon to look at the wiring in a house we're buying. The best thing about his service was that he explained all his findings in language that we could both understand so we know exactly what we're dealing with. We used him once previously for a small repair job and he was quick, friendly and efficient.

When I tell people that their sockets are tripping out because of slugs or their lights are full of wasps they usually don't believe me until I show them the photos. 😂

I was in Marshfield recently stood on a ladder in a loft hatch and nearly fell off the ladder when I opened this joint box to find it full of wasps.

Are there any songs that take you back to a particular space or memory?

For me, it's Another Day In Paradise by Phil Collins that reminds me of this boat trip on my honeymoon in Santorini with my wife.

Rather than fuseboard safety, this one is about smoke alarms. Did you know your smoke alarms expire?

Most smoke alarms should be replaced after 10 years, (some manufacturers will be less) The power supply will still work, but the sensor and internal parts will deteriorate with age and dust contamination.

Look for a “Replace By” date on the side or back of the alarm so you know when yours are due to be replaced.

Picture attached which shows an example of a 'Replace by' sticker
