🎃 Halloween Safety: Keep Your Electrics Spooky — Not Shocking
Halloween is the perfect time to light up your home with glowing pumpkins, spooky lights, and eerie garden displays. But when it comes to powering those decorations outdoors, it’s vital to remember that electricity and damp conditions can be a dangerous mix.
At Sparkontrol Limited, we want you and your family to enjoy a safe and electrifying Halloween — so here are our top electrical safety tips for your outdoor setup this spooky season.
⚡ 1. Make Sure You’re Protected by an RCD
An RCD (Residual Current Device) is a life-saving device that instantly cuts the power if it detects a fault, like electricity leaking to earth through moisture, damaged cables, or a person.
If you’re plugging decorations or lighting in outdoors, ensure the socket is
✅ Protected by an RCD inside your Consumer Unit (CU), or
✅ An outdoor socket with built-in RCD protection
Without an RCD, even a small fault could cause a dangerous electric shock.
⚙️ 2. Check the RCD Type — Not All Are the Same
Older homes often still have Type AC RCDs, which are designed only to detect pure AC faults.
However, many modern devices — such as LED lighting, EV chargers, and electronic decorations — can produce DC current that may blind a Type AC RCD, preventing it from tripping correctly.
That means your RCD might not protect you if DC currents are present.
Type A RCDs are now the recommended standard in domestic installations because they detect both AC and pulsating DC currents, offering much better protection for modern equipment.
🧠 Tip: If you’re unsure which RCD your consumer unit has, look for the symbol:
Type AC: ~
Type A: ~ ⎓ (AC and DC combined symbol)
If yours is Type AC, it may be time for an upgrade — we can check and advise.
🔌 3. Use Outdoor-Rated Equipment
Always make sure your lights, extension leads, and connectors are IP-rated for outdoor use.
Using indoor lights or plugs outside risks water ingress, which can trip your RCD — or worse, cause a shock.
💡 4. Don’t Overload Circuits
It’s tempting to go all out with spooky lighting, fog machines, and sound effects — but overloading extension leads or plug sockets can cause overheating.
Always check the load ratings and use fused, heavy-duty extensions rated for outdoor use.
🔦 5. Turn Off Before Bed
Before heading to sleep or leaving the house, switch off or unplug all outdoor decorations. This simple habit prevents both electrical and fire hazards overnight.
🕸️ In Summary
A little electrical awareness goes a long way. This Halloween, make sure your garden ghosts are the only things that go “Boo!” — not your electrics.
If you’re unsure about your RCD protection or want to upgrade from Type AC to Type A, contact Sparkontrol Limited. Our qualified electricians can test your installation, fit safe outdoor sockets, and ensure your electrics are ready for the season.
