This is the scabiosa! It's a fully hardy herbaceous perennial, flowering from July to September.

If you look carefully the flower head is actually made up of much smaller flowers. Bees and butterflies alike absolutely love them making them great to attract wildlife into your garden.

🧩Fun fact🧩 I bet you can't guess what family they come from......The same family as honeysuckle!
The botanical name for this family is caprifoliaceae.

🌲Tree of the week!🌳

Here is the Indian Beam tree or the Latin name Catalpas. It is a very eye catching tree, with beautiful flowers that turn into long bean pods (inedible)

This is surprisingly hardy, surviving temperatures down to around -15c and can reach 15m high if allowed. Bees also love them!

🧩Fun fact! The veins on its large heart shaped leaves, contain nectar which ants love and also farm. As a result the ants protect the tree from pest creating a mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship.

🪴Shrub of the week!!🍊

Everyone here is the stunning philadelphus aka 'the mock orange' named this because of the resemblance to the true orange blossom.

It's a fully hardy deciduous shrub requiring little maintenance apart from pruning in late autumn. For reliable flowers, it prefers full sun and well drained soil.

🧩Fun fact! In the victorian language of flowers, giving a mpck orange plant symbolised deceit because it produces orange like blossoms but bore no fruit.

Shrub of the week: Black Lace Elder (Sambucus nigra 'Black Lace')

With this week's chilly temperatures, grey skies and persistent rain, it feels more like October than it does June! So it seemed fitting to feature the stunning Black Lace Elder, a shrub that brings autumn colours to the garden all summer long.

This hardy shrub requires little care apart from pruning to keep in check as can get to 10ft. The striking contrast between the pale pink of the delicate flowers and the black foliage makes this a show stopper in any garden, instantly grabbing deserved attention from human, insect and bird guests alike in your garden!

🧩Fun fact: Black Lace Elder is a cultivated variety of our native Elder. While the flowers can be used to make elderflower cordial and the berries can be cooked into jams and wines, it's the striking foliage that steals the show in this garden favourite!

🪻Flower of the week this week is this beautiful specimen! The French Lavender. This is a hardy, drought tolerant shrub that loves full sun and good drainage, but is very low maintenance.

🧩 Fun fact! Unlike traditional varieties, the French Lavender has a antiseptic quality and as such was used by soldiers during WW1 as a antiseptic.
