It hardly seems possible that summer has ended and meteorological autumn has begun. This year has whizzed by!
Summer 2025 has been challenging for most lawn owners and september lawn care is going to be all about helping your lawn recover from drought and prepare for winter.
First and foremost - aeration and scarification are more important this autumn than they've ever been. After a stressful summer, the grasses in your lawn really do need optimal growing conditions if they are to build their resilience for winter weather. If you need help with these specialist tasks, please contact your local UKLCA member as soon as possible - their diaries are filling up fast!
It's time to switch to autumn/winter formula lawn feeds as too much nitrogen at this time of year can lead to weak winter growth and poor disease resistance. Buy the very best feed you can afford - better still, have a professional grade fertiliser accurately applied by a lawn care specialist.
After scarifying, overseeding is essential to thicken the sward and help ensure that the gaps between grass plants are not invaded by weeds. Ask your lawn care professional for advice on the best species for your particular lawn.
Late summer is when crane flies lay the eggs that will develop into leatherjackets. Leatherjackets are highly efficient lawn killers and by the time you notice them causing damage it'll be too late to do anything about it. If you notice crane flies (aka daddy long legs) in your garden act now and ask your lawn care professional to take measures to control any possible infestation of leatherjackets.
Most importantly of all - make the most of September's mild weather and enjoy your lawn in every way you can....winter will be upon us before we know it!
