🔧 Baxi EcoBlue Advance — ignition fault

Another boiler repair carried out.

This Baxi EcoBlue Advance was experiencing ongoing ignition issues, so after carrying out the necessary checks, the decision was made to replace the PCB (printed circuit board).

Once the new PCB was fitted, the boiler was tested through its operation to make sure everything was working correctly.

It's not always about simply changing parts until something works — proper fault-finding is what gets you to the actual cause of the problem. 🔥

🔧 Vaillant gas valve replacement

This Vaillant was suffering from an ignition problems and fault codes, and during testing the actuator within the gas valve was making some very unusual noises when operating.

After carrying out the relevant checks, the gas valve was identified as the culprit and replaced.

Once the new valve was fitted, the boiler was tested to make sure it was operating correctly and safely.

Sometimes it's not a case of simply looking at a fault code and changing a part. Listening to what the boiler is doing and carrying out the correct checks can tell you a lot. 🔥🔧

Another Vaillant back up and running and the customer was happy that they now have heat and hot water again. 👍

💧 Unvented cylinders — more than just a hot-water tank

That big cylinder in the cupboard might not look particularly exciting… but there’s quite a bit going on behind the scenes.

This is an unvented hot-water system, which supplies hot water at mains pressure. Alongside the cylinder itself, you've got components such as zone valves, pumps, expansion equipment and safety controls — and every part needs to be working correctly.

One of the most important things with an unvented cylinder is making sure it receives regular maintenance by an engineer who is G3 qualified.

A proper annual check should include the important safety controls and associated components, rather than simply checking that you still have hot water.

Things such as:
🔧 Safety/relief valves
🔧 Expansion vessel and system pressure
🔧 Temperature controls
🔧 Zone valves and associated controls
🔧 Discharge pipework
🔧 General condition and operation of the cylinder

These systems operate under mains pressure, so the safety components are there for a reason.

If you have an unvented cylinder, don't forget about it just because the hot water is working. Regular maintenance can identify problems before they become bigger — and helps make sure those safety controls are doing the job they're designed to do.

🔥 Is your boiler pressure where it should be?

Your boiler pressure plays an important part in keeping your heating system working properly.

Most sealed heating systems will sit around 1–1.5 bar when cold. If the pressure drops below 1 bar, you may start to experience problems with your heating or hot water.

💧 Need to top it up occasionally? That can be normal.

⚠️ Having to top it up regularly? That’s not something to ignore. It could point to a leak, an issue with the expansion vessel, or another problem within the system.

If you're constantly reaching for the filling loop, it’s worth getting it checked rather than just repeatedly topping it up.

🔧 What actually goes on during a boiler service?

It’s more than just giving the boiler a quick look over and ticking a box.

With the case removed, there’s a lot more going on inside your boiler that needs to be checked properly — from the heat exchanger and burner components to the fan, electrodes, safety devices and condensate system.

And while we’re at it, we’ll also be looking at things like gas pressures, combustion readings and the condition of the system itself.

The second photo shows another important part of the system — the magnetic filter, helping to capture sludge and magnetic debris before it can cause problems elsewhere in the heating system.

A proper service is about making sure the boiler is safe, operating correctly and giving you the best chance of avoiding an unexpected breakdown.
