One of the best jobs I’ve tackled this year… installing a dripper irrigation system for the greenhouse tomatoes. 🍅

With summers getting hotter and drier, keeping tomatoes consistently watered can be a challenge, especially when you’re trying to juggle everything else in the garden.

I’ve set up drippers at the base of each plant so the water goes exactly where it’s needed — straight to the roots rather than wasted on paths or foliage.

The tomatoes are already flowering and hopefully this will help keep them growing steadily through the warmer months ahead.

Do you hand water your tomatoes or have you switched to irrigation?

Grow this super useful flower in your veggie patch 🌸

I love growing these, they’re not only beautiful they’re very useful around your veggies too. They’re good for all, from the bees and aphids to us humans, they’re an all round top plant to grow.

Aphids and the cabbage white butterfly caterpillars LOVE them, keeping pests away from your veg. I always feel bad netting the brassicas but if you grow nasturtiums then you’ve got something that the caterpillars can turn their attention too and you can be happy that you’re keeping the ecosystem intact.

Don’t forget you can eat these too as the leaves and flowers are edible 👌 I grow them in the greenhouse under my tomatoes and around my brassicas outside.
A thoroughly lovely plant for everyone on the plot ❤️

Very exciting that tiny tomatoes have made an appearance, and of course it’s ‘Bloody Butcher’ and ‘Sungold’, they’re always first off the starting block.
Tomatoes are growing nicely in their final positions, the rest of them are waiting in a cold frame to go into pots outside but that’s a job for another day. Greenhouse full of tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, cucumbers, melons and chilli, apart from the toms they’ll all go in pots so I can move them in and out according to the weather .

Self sown Alyssum everywhere which looks and smells divine 🌸

Here’s what you can be getting on with this week. Hopefully by now you should be harvesting some deliciousness from the plot .
It’s easy at this stage to put your feet up and watch your early sown seedlings develop but keep it up and I promise you’ll extend your growing season much more than you realise. Growing all year around needs all round attention but it needn’t be arduous so try and sow your seed little and often so you don’t get overwhelmed. Temperatures in the south where I am are warming up as from next week again so it is a great time to get your seeds in the ground now ready for that warm spell to hit because there’s moisture in the ground at the moment seeds will readily germinate and get their roots down.

If your planting out seedlings then keep sone fleece handy for protection from that spicy wind 😉

Whatever you’re doing, hope you all have a really lovely weekend.☺️

Trying to work out which tomatoes make the grade to be planted into the greenhouse beds doesn’t get any easier 😂 I’ll grow at least 3 each of my faves and then some will be grown outside too. The remainder of these beauties will be put on my plant stall over the weekend weather permitting for others to enjoy 🍅

Faves for me are Auriga, Uluru Ochre, Rose De Berne, Burmese Sour, Indigo Cherry Drop, Bloody Butcher. Black Beauty and Amethyst Jewell of course makes the grade as well not just for their colour, as well as a myriad of others.. seeds saved of course for you guys to purchase 🍅

It’s time for some serious shuffling in the greenhouse because of the situation with the rats eating everything I’ve had to keep everything in the greenhouse to protect all the little seedlings but now my tomatoes are desperately needing to be planted out in the greenhouse bed so I’m going to have to bite the bullet and move things around looks a bit of a mess right now and obviously it’s freezing outside which doesn’t help but I’ve gotta make a start. First thing to go will be the hot bed it’s become too heavy for me to move in my own and I’m going to have to think of another option next year and I guess make a lighter frame would be a start. Might sell this one and work out another solution. If anyone’s interested in it, I am in Sussex. Video shows the bed itself 👍

So today’s job is mainly playing around with these babies, prepping the beds and planting out the tomatoes time willing! 🤞

Happy Sunday everyone 🥰

Go on… stick some Sticky W***y in your pot 🍵

Not just clingy, this Sticky W***y (aka cleavers) might be called a w**d, but it packs a punch cos it supports your lymphatic system, helps detox, and can even soothe your skin.

Let it seep in water and drink daily … it’s one of nature’s underrated spring power plants 🙌

Seeds to sow this week and there’s a lot! We have staples like carrots, beetroot, parsnips and radish, through to courgette, squash, sweetcorn… and finally beans, very exciting time as we’re really into the growing season now.
So on that note it is time for French and runner beans as the warmth is coming, but don’t rush them too early, they’ll reward you with much stronger plants if the conditions are right.
If there’s one thing to stay on top of at the moment it’s watering. Hot weather makes it really tricky to keep everything evenly moist, especially when seeds are germinating. Sit your modules or trays on capillary matting if you can — it takes the stress out of constant watering and keeps moisture levels much more consistent, the roots can take up what they need. What you’re aiming for is compost that feels like a moist chocolate cake. Direct sowing crops like carrots, parsnips and radish especially need that consistency. If they dry out, even briefly, germination can be patchy or fail altogether, so keep an eye on them daily, they can be tricky at the best of times and watering is just on reason for them to sulk.
Don’t be tempted to plant everything out too soon. Nothing wants to go into the ground until after your last frost date, for Sussex its approx. 6th May. You’ll get far better results raising seedlings under cover first, it protects them from cold nights and also from being wiped out by pests the minute they appear. And then the flowers, so many to mention, so I have picked some of my faves for the list, they’re not just there to look pretty. The more variety you sow, the more you attract a range of pollinators into your garden. Different shapes and colours bring in different insects, and the more you have visiting, the better your veg will perform. Courgettes, squash, cucumbers — they all rely on pollination to produce fruit, so flowers aren’t optional, they’re part of the whole system and you should be thinking of your garden as one whole system to get the best out of it. So have a wonderful break everyone and enjoy your garden whatever you may be doing ❤️🌸❤️
