What a great idea from the team at RHS Garden Wisley.

The hidden world of roots is so often forgotten about when caring for trees, and this illustrates it so well.

Rooting zone compaction and root damage are some of the most frequent causes of declining tree health in our towns, cities, and gardens.

If you want your trees to thrive....remember to take care of the rooting area.

Our Arboriculture team recently had to cut down a large Pinus contorta tree in the Pinetum which was around 80 years old as unfortunately the crown was dying off. It had been in poor health for a while due to a fungal decay that affects tree roots.

We decided to retain the stump and have air blasted it to remove the soil around the root plate to beautifully showcase what the tree’s mature roots looked like under soil. It provides a fascinating insight into what’s going on underground!🌳

Tree preservation orders (TPOs)are used to legally protect trees.

Carrying out work on trees subject to a TPO without prior permission from the local council can incur up to a £20000 fine (plus legal costs in this case).

Although this sounds like an expensive fine, some would argue that it's to low, with some unscrupulous developers just Factoring in the cost of potential fines, knowing fine well they can still make huge profits.

What do we think, is the fine to small, about right or to high??

If you own or manage trees with tree preservation orders it is often prudent or required to involve an arboricultural consultant to evaluate the tree(s) and specify any works that may be required in a formal report that can be provided to the local authority for consideration.

Don't get caught out! (even 10 years down the line).

Claire Rands was called "arrogant" by a judge who dismissed her claim she hadn't known about the order

An interesting example of artists bracket (Ganoderma applanatum) showing geotropism.
The original bracket was growing parallel to the ground when this beech tree was standing. Once the tree fell, the new fungal bracket grew from the old, again growing parallel to the ground.
This keeps the pore surface in the optimal orientation for spore dispersal.
this bracket is obviously doing very well at producing spores as you can see they have covered the upper surface of the bracket and the foliage next to it.

Trees in the wind

How do trees (usually) survive high winds?

One mechanism is "mass dampening", this is where the branches (particularly smaller branches) and stem of the tree move in an out of phase manner.

This dissipates the winds energy and reduces the peak forces acting upon individual components of the tree.

When specifying pruning work to trees we must consider the effect, as removing or reducing particular branches may alter this mass dampening mechanism.

Bio mechanics to one side, I could sit for hours watching this sycamore dance in the wind.

With more frequent hot and dry weather, we will need to consider the effects on our tree population, both for safety reasons and for tree preservation.

Three heatwaves and a lack of rain have left London's trees struggling - but what can be done?
