โAs part of our 100th anniversary, we are sharing archival photos from one of the most solemn and significant commissions in Dunhouse Quarry's history: crafting the Lockerbie Memorial Cairn for Arlington National Cemetery.
โDedicated on 3 November 1995 as a gift of solace from the people of Scotland to the United States, the memorial stands in honour of the 270 lives lost in the tragedyโthe 259 passengers and crew aboard Pan Am Flight 103, and the 11 residents of Lockerbie on 21 December 1988.
โSlabs of iconic red Corsehill sandstone, sourced near Annan, were cut into 270 piecesโeach carefully dimensioned and tapered so that together they would fit seamlessly into a traditional circular Scottish cairn, with 270 stones representing the 270 lives lost.
โEach stone was hand pitched, numbered, and dry laid before being carefully packed to ship across the Atlantic to Arlington National Cemetery.
โAt the dedication ceremony, the memorial cairn, along with a commemorative model cairn made from the same stone, was presented to President Clinton by Sir Hector Monro, the Scottish MP and chairman of the Lockerbie Air Disaster Trust.
โNearly four decades on from the tragedy, we remember all those who lost their lives, the families and loved ones left behind, and the Lockerbie community, whose lives were changed forever.
โIt remains a profound privilege for Dunhouse to have played a small part in creating a memorial dedicated to their memory.
