Transforming 100m2 of virgin ground into a stunning, 5-car driveway designed to last.

Here is how we built this custom block paving driveway:

The Build Breakdown
Solid Foundations: Full 300 deep excavation into virgin ground to guarantee maximum structural stability.
Sub-Base Prep: 150-200 mm of Type 1 sub-base laid and compacted in intervals for a rock-solid, non-settling foundation.
Edge Retention: Brand new pin kerbs installed along all soft verges and neighboring boundaries to securely lock the paving in place.
Detailing & Finish: A bold 200mm block border framed with contrast 100 x 100 mm white speckled granite picture-framing, surrounding a striking two-tone slate monoblock in a herringbone pattern laid on a 45° angle.

Walls are now going in on our 'Rain Garden' in Redding. Tomorrow will see us work on them and also place out the rocks and sandstone sheets to make a small stream and waterfall leading from one end to the other that you can walk over. It's a first for us but looking forward to it coming together

🛠️ TRADE TIP THURSDAY: Resin Bound Driveways - Why preparation is key and "Cheap" Often Costs You Twice
Resin Driveways are extremely popular right now so thanks to Cuthelton Landscaping, Resin and Driveways for sharing this informative reel which walks us through the part that actually makes or breaks a resin driveway: getting the base and levels and falls right before a drop of resin goes down.

They install 150- 200mm type 3 followed by 120mm permeable concrete OR 40mm of the new Daltex resin sub base. With two layers of mesh.
Then they install a 20mm top coat of UV stable Daltex resin.

Preparation takes time - and time costs money. If a quote for your driveway seems too good to be true, it usually is.

Are you tired of seeing driveways sink, shift, and fall apart after just a couple of winters?

When you get quotes for a new driveway, a bargain price often means hidden shortcuts. Here is exactly what goes into a proper build—and where those cheap estimates are secretly cutting corners:

The Standard We Dig To
Dig Depth: We excavate down to a full depth to guarantee a rock-solid foundation. Cheap quotes only scrape the surface to save on haulage and spoil costs, leaving your driveway on weak, shifting soil.

Base Compaction: We lay sub-base Type 1 stone in strict layers, running a heavy-duty diesel whacker plate over every single pass. The weight and vibration of a diesel whacker bind the stone significantly tighter than standard petrol DIY whackers. Cheap quotes skip the extra stone and use light machinery, leaving air pockets that cause future dip spots.

Screed Level & Materials: We lay a precise screed layer using premium red granite for maximum stability, interlocking strength, and drainage. Cheaper contractors often use soft build sand or poor-grade grit that washes away or turns to slush under heavy vehicles, inhibits plant growth.

Where Bargain Estimates Cut Corners
Shallow Excavation: Less digging means less soil to cart away, saving them money while ruining your sub-base depth.

Skimping on Type 1 Stone: Leaving out a few inches of sub-base stone reduces their material bill, but causes your surface to crack under wheel load.

Lightweight Compaction: Quick passes with small equipment mean the base isn't properly consolidated.

Cheap Sub-surface Materials: Using improper sand or low-grade aggregate that breaks down under pressure.

We don't cut corners on sub-base depth, extra stone, or heavy compaction because the strength of your driveway is in what you don't see.

Let's talk resin.... there's a preconception that it's cheap... you are wrong. It's expensive, it the top end of driveway installations.

Ask your contractor leading questions, ask for the build up when pricing against contractors.

We install 150- 200mm type 3 (type one holds water, so in the winter it could cause issues) then followed by 120mm permeable concrete OR 40mm of the new Daltex resin sub base. With two layers of mesh.

Then we install a 20mm top coat of UV stable resin.

So effectively you are doing almost two driveways. Plus it's a hand finish. So slower to go down over a block driveway and far more technical.

If a contractor is offering resin for cheap, it's probably non UV stable, they are scrimping on the sub bases and top coat.

Just recently we were asked to view a failed resin driveway. No word of a lie, 75mm type 1, 50mm of tar then a dusting of resin. Full job has failed due to these issues. And it wasn't the cheapest quote.

Ask questions, do your homework.
