An outside tap might look like a simple installation, but there's an important detail many people don't know about.
To help protect your drinking water, I fit a double check valve inside the property, rather than relying on one built into the outside tap.
Positioning the valve indoors not only helps protect the water supply, but also reduces the risk of it freezing, jamming or becoming damaged during the winter months – something I've seen happen on a number of installations.
It's also worth knowing that not all outside taps are installed to the same standard. Some are fitted using only the integrated check valve in the tap itself, or without sleeving the pipe where it passes through the wall. While this may be quicker or cheaper, it doesn't provide the same level of protection or meet the requirements of the Water Supply Regulations.
It's a small detail, but it's one of the things that separates a proper installation from simply fitting an outside tap.
