Ground has officially been broken at the West Kirkby Gateway Development in Kirkby-in-Ashfield.

Procured through the PAGABO Medium Works Public Sector Framework, this new development will see 12 modern apartments with on-site parking, cycle storage and landscaping, supporting the demand for high-quality housing in the town centre.

Construction is taking place on the site of the old Wyvern Club, which was demolished last year after being identified as a key location for redevelopment. The new building will provide a more attractive welcome for visitors, residents and those just passing through, with the design of the building reflecting the industrial heritage of the site and celebrating the history of the railway and its workers.

We were joined on site for the official ceremony with representatives from Ashfield District Council including Cllr Matthew Relf & Paul Crawford, Pulse Consult and Kinver Business Solutions.

We look forward to bringing you further updates on this exciting development.

As part of our commitment to delivering social value, we are passionate about inspiring the next generation through careers support and hands-on learning opportunities.

We recently welcomed local students from Doncaster College to our Bentley Health Hub site in Doncaster for their work experience placements.

Aniq and Max, who are studying Electrical Installations, alongside Lucas and Kian, who are Plumbing students, spent time with our team gaining valuable insight into the construction industry and learning more about live site operations.

Great to have them on site and support their journey into the industry!

AWARD WIN! 🏆

Fantastic to see that our Barnsley College IOT project won 'Retrofit Project of the Year' at the Constructing Excellence Yorkshire and Humber Awards 2026!

The transformation included the refurbishment of the former open-air college courtyard into a fully enclosed atrium, complete with a new glazed roof to create a bright and central hub which houses a modern Learning Resource Centre, set across tiered mezzanine floors.

The project combined sustainable technologies, along with supporting local labour and local students through social value initiatives.

The project was also awarded a top score on the Considerate Constructors Scheme of 45 out of 45, highlighting the project teams investment in the project⭐

Congratulations to everyone involved!

Our team at Bentley Health Hub recently came together to donate and deliver over £150 worth of food and essential supplies to the BBC Food Bank at Bentley Baptist Community Food Bank, located just 500 metres from our site.

The BBC Food Bank is an independent organisation run by dedicated volunteers, supporting communities across North Doncaster. Through food parcels, community referrals and self-referral services, the food bank provides vital assistance to individuals and families facing hardship, ensuring support remains accessible to those who need it most.

The donation included a range of essential items such as pasta, rice, cereal and toiletries, helping to support local residents and families. This initiative reflects G F Tomlinson’s ongoing commitment to creating positive social value alongside the projects we deliver.

A special thank you to our supply chain partner Linsco Ltd for their support.

World Environment Day 🌍

Today, we're highlighting a project that demonstrates the important role refurbishment can play in creating a more sustainable future. The refurbishment of the former Kingston Centre to create a new and improved home for St Leonard's School in Stafford was procured through the Constructing West Midlands Framework. This redevelopment showcases the positive impact of targeted decarbonisation measures.

Key sustainability improvements included:
✅ Thermally insulated double-glazed windows with solar control tinting
✅ Enhanced building fabric, thermal storage ceiling panels and draught lobbies
✅ Replacement of end-of-life heating systems with modern low-carbon alternatives
✅ 59m² of rooftop photovoltaic panels
✅ LED and PIR lighting throughout
✅ Hybrid heating, cooling and ventilation systems to improve indoor air quality and energy efficiency

These measures will deliver annual energy savings of 10,552 kWh and reduce the building's carbon emissions by 166.68 tCO₂e each year.

Sustainability extended beyond the building itself. During construction:
🌱 99% of site waste was recycled
🌱 4.7 tonnes of waste wood were diverted through Community Wood Recycling
🌱 80 trees, donated by The Woodland Trust, were planted to create a new forest area for pupils, enhancing biodiversity and providing opportunities to engage with the natural environment

On World Environment Day, we're reminded that sustainable construction is about more than reducing carbon it's about creating lasting environmental, educational and community benefits for generations to come.

Volunteers' Week Spotlight 🌟

Last year, we were proud to support our chosen charity, Treetops Hospice, by volunteering at the Moonlight Walk in Derby. This year, we're delighted to be returning to support the event once again on Friday 18th September.

As part of our commitment to Treetops Hospice, four members of our team volunteered at the event, helping to marshal the route and guide more than 400 walkers safely around the 5K and 10K courses.

The Moonlight Walk is a fantastic community event that raises vital funds for the hospice's services, and we're proud to play a small part in helping make the evening a success. We look forward to supporting the event again this year and cheering on everyone taking part.

🔊 Take a back stage look at the latest progress of the Stephenson Memorial Hall redevelopment, with the recent ITV Calendar coverage:

The transformation of this Grade II Listed venue has included an extensive restoration, expansion and refurbishment, which will protect the building for future generations whilst preserving its historic charm. It comprises a 625-seat theatre, with extended back stage dressing areas, museum galleries, two bars and event and community space.

Following the venue’s transformation, this Chesterfield landmark will be reopened as ‘1435’, in celebration of Chesterfield resident and “father of railways” George Stephenson whose innovations included the standard gauge rail track set at 1,435mm apart, which went on to become the global benchmark for rail travel.

Rail travel carries people, ideas and opportunities across continents. That same spirit of connection sits at the heart of 1435, which will bring visitors together through arts, culture and heritage while creating fresh links across the community.
