⚡ The rules for electrical installations have changed!

As of 15th October 2026, Amendment 4 of BS 7671 is now the current edition of the UK Wiring Regulations.

But what does this actually mean?

⚡ The traditional consumer unit was designed for a simpler home but the home is changing.

For decades, domestic electrical distribution was relatively straightforward:

Grid → Consumer Unit → Loads

Today, a home may include solar PV, battery storage, EV charging, heat pumps, backup power, monitoring and smart energy controls.

Electricity is no longer necessarily travelling in just one direction.

A home can now generate, store, consume and export energy, turning the traditional consumer into a prosumer.

That creates a bigger engineering question.

It’s no longer simply about adding another circuit. We increasingly need to consider:

⚡ Where can electrical energy originate?
⚡ Which conductors may carry current from multiple sources?
⚡ How do generation, storage and large loads interact?
⚡ What happens as energy begins flowing in both directions?

The consumer unit isn’t disappearing. But as homes become increasingly complex energy systems, the electrical infrastructure surrounding it may need to evolve.

Perhaps the next step isn’t simply a bigger consumer unit.

Perhaps it’s time to think about domestic energy distribution architecture.

Over the coming weeks, Eco-ESS will be exploring multi-source installations, BS 7671 Regulation 551.7.2, load management, battery and EV interaction, bidirectional energy flow and the future of domestic electrical distribution.

⚡ Are you ready for Amendment 4?

A significant change is coming to the UK electrical industry on the 15 October 2026,

From 15th October 2026 BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 — Amendment 4 of the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations becomes the standard that must be used, with the previous version withdrawn.

And for the renewable energy industry, there’s an important addition.

🔋 Amendment 4 introduces a new chapter dedicated to stationary secondary batteries, reflecting the rapid growth of battery energy storage in UK homes and businesses.

The new requirements address areas including:

• Battery system design
• Battery location and ventilation
• Fire-risk mitigation
• Bidirectional and hybrid inverters
• Protective devices suitable for two-way energy flow
