Here is a picture of a fire place after I removed the cover behind a gas fire. This fire had apparently been serviced regularly. Gas safe procedures dictate that this cover should be removed and the fire cavity checked for debris build up and cleaned if necessary. I doubt this has ever been done on this fire. Such debris could lead to a build up of toxic gases which could then enter the room. Furthermore this person had recently started using the room as a bedroom. This too is highly dangerous with an open flued gas fire in the room. Immediately dangerous as we say in the trade. Fire could have been left on as it was safe once obstructions cleared. But could not be left on whilst room being used as a bedroom. Take care out there folks.

So! In the summer you should leave your thermostatic rad valves in the fully open position. This will avoid them seizing in the closed position causing radiators not to work.

Another top tip anyone? Do you have a radiator that isn't working? If it has a thermostatic radiator valve (trv) this could be the problem. This is recognisable by a large plastic head with numbers on it. The head can be removed by hand by unscrewing from base. This will reveal a pin underneath protruding from body of metal part of valve. If that does the trick then all you need to do is get a replacement head. Bring that one to your plumbers merchants and get a match. If not check to see the pin has movement. Press down on it (using your finger will hurt). If it depresses and springs back up then it is likely the problem lies elsewhere. Check the valve on the other side is open. Questions?
