Recently BS 5839-1:2025 with updates has been released and here are some of the key updates we believe are particularly important to be aware of:
Essential Zone Plans: For buildings with multiple zones, especially those where people sleep, clear zone plans are now required to assist with faster emergency responses.
Automated Alerts for Care: In residential care premises (previously known as 'care homes'), fire alarms must now automatically send alerts to monitoring stations, enabling quicker action.
Updated Language: Some terminology changes, such as 'care homes' now being referred to as 'residential care premises' and 'fire service' as 'fire and rescue service'.
Visual Alarms: There's increased emphasis on the use of visual alarms, which are crucial for individuals with hearing impairments.
Old Fire Systems: Removal of old and redundant equipment during modification is required.
Panel Notice: In an attempt to help reduce false fire alarms, fire alarm panels must now display a new label:
“FALSE ALARM NOTICE: This fire alarm has an active connection to the fire and rescue service."
