What a summer it’s been for thatching 🌾

Doing the ridge means coming to the end of the job 🙌🏼

From the start to the end - a re-thatch in the Devon countryside.

We had some of the hottest weather we’ve ever worked in while at this job and obviously, in true Devon style some rain. That didn’t stop us getting this beautiful thatched home looking good as new 🤝

Dressing the reed 🌾

One of those stages where you really start to see the new roof taking shape.

Here Tommy is dressing the reed, creating that clean, even finish. You can also catch a glimpse of the old thatch alongside the fresh new reed, quite a difference when you see them side by side.

Traditional craftsmanship, one bundle at a time.

It all starts with the prep 🌾

Trimming a bundle of reed ready for the roof. Removing the rough ends and getting the bundle tidy before it’s laid. One of the many small jobs behind traditional thatching.

Removing the old thatch before getting ready to lay new reed 🌾

Once the reed has been laid into position, it needs to be securely fixed to the roof before it can be dressed into its final shape.

A small part of the process, but one that’s essential to creating a strong, long lasting thatched roof.

Traditional craft, done by hand 🔨

One of those oddly satisfying parts of the thatching process. Dressing the reed into place to create that smooth, even finish 🌾

Apparently the internet really loves watching moss come off a thatched roof… 👀🌿

So, by popular demand, here’s another oddly satisfying dose of moss removal. All part of the process when maintaining and restoring a traditional thatched roof.

A closer look at the craft 🌾

There’s a lot more to a thatched roof than meets the eye.

Every bundle is laid and worked by hand, gradually building up the roof using skills and techniques that have been passed down through generations.

It’s slow, skilled work but that’s exactly what makes traditional thatching so special.
