Dewis Gwyllt- Wild Choice

I've been planting Aspen (Populus tremula) seed in the last few days... As far as we know, this is the only fertile seed from anywhere in N. Wales. To get an idea of the size, this a comparison with dandelion seed... Tricky, but we now have a small Aspen woodland in a pot.

In the last few days we've been out and about visiting stands of native Aspen (Populus tremula) to collect DNA samples. Some have been at very inaccessible (cliff-bound) sites where they seem to be hanging on out of the reach of animal grazing.

Exciting to also see a range of other interesting species which rely on Aspen at the same sites. We came across a patch of Violet webcap fungi (Cortinarius violaceus) which is only the 4th record for Wales and the Orange bolete (Leccinum aurianticum), as well as the caterpillar of the Swallow prominent (Pheosia tremula).

Following over three and a half years of research and product development work, the Dewis Gwyllt project comes to an end in September '22. The DG Team would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved, for all their hard work and enthusiasm. We are pleased to have established a birch syrup processing hub at Llais y Goedwig, which will continue to support tappers for the next 12-months.
