The clue is in the name...here at Ivy Maud Design we appreciate Ivy! I always love seeing our Ivy flowers literally buzzing with honey bees and lots of other pollinators at this time of year. No need to worry about stings - they are focussed purely on all that nectar and pollen as they stock up for winter.
Maybe it's not the right plant for every place, but it's such a good one to grow on a garden wall where possible. We let it get thick enough for the birds to shelter and nest in - our robins and wrens love it. Then there are those gorgeous blue-black berries in winter - the blackbirds will be gobbling those up in February when all the other hedgerow cupboards are dry. And I will gather armfuls at Christmas to make wreaths and wind around our mantle piece. I wouldn't be without it but I am not very successful in persuading my clients to embrace it - must try harder!

Hydrangea flowers are, I think, at their most exquisite as we tip into Autumn. They can be dried for wreaths and other winter decorations: they look so opulent and luxurious don't they? 🩷💜🩶

Great working alongside Susan Stephen and our own Fiona Miller today to plant up the new mix of plants. Susan has been working here for years alongside our lovely gardening client, so we know that the garden is in safe hands. Gardeners create, nurture, sustain and develop gardens of all sizes and working with a good gardener is 👌🌹

First day back from holidays and straight into planting: thank goodness for Fiona having all the plant orders organised! This is such a lovely collaborative project with the clients, architect, drystone dykers, landscapers and Ivy Maud team all working together. We have developed the gardens a little at a time over many years, trying to use stone and plants already on site, as well as all these exciting new ones today. It's grown and evolved with the client's growing family and the ebb and flow of life: sensitively and with real joy. Today we so enjoyed the early autumn colours and the energy of the wind - I might remember to take more photos tomorrow!

Monet's waterlilies Musée de l'Orangerie Paris. Photos are hopeless really - except as a prompt to visit and lose yourself in space, time, light and water...This is what water does in a garden when we allow ourselves to sit with it. Even a small pond contains the magic.... 🦎🪷🦋The last photo is from my recent visit to Loch Erne - the same translucent wonder 🩵💚💛🩷🩶

After a lifetime of summers in Ireland with my family I have broken out and started visiting places that are not A) graves B) relatives C) bakeries....(You probably need to be Irish to get this!)

This week we went to Florence Court, built by the Earls of Enniskillen. The extensive apple orchard definitely needs labels but delicious free apples are on offer amongst the dahlias 😋.
There are lovely woodland walks and 'pleasure grounds' laid out, unnervingly, in the 1840's, the decade containing the worst famine years in Ireland.....Makes you think

I have been very proud to create this little patch of city centre goodness with Stirling Baptist Church Green Team volunteers. 18 months ago it was an empty bed which had previously been used for annual bedding plants. The local BID team asked us for help and gave us a small grant to pay for plants. From the moment we started work, the reaction of the public has been amazing. People stop to say how happy they are to see us caring for this little patch, how they enjoy it changing with the seasons. Several local people have spoken about how looking out on the plants over the last year has helped their mental health. I do think the regular presence of the gardeners (in this case volunteers) has made a difference as well as the actual garden. People feel the care.

With no watering after the first few weeks last year, this fairly dense perennial planting has coped well with the hot, dry summer and people have now started to ask about this too.

So this is where I have escaped to if I'm not at my desk working on your project 😉
A radiant fistfull of sticky marmalade marigolds mixed with the sharp peppery scent of nasturtiums. I'm all good to go now for a day of designing 🧡

This could be the perfect garden for our sunny summer! All planting and landscaping were fitted around the existing mature but rather lifeless garden. A few months on and it is bursting with life, and who wouldn't want to paddle in that glorious wildlife pond created by Calum Gordon?
