I have been very proud to create this little patch of city centre goodness with Stirling Baptist Church Green Team volunteers. 18 months ago it was an empty bed which had previously been used for annual bedding plants. The local BID team asked us for help and gave us a small grant to pay for plants. From the moment we started work, the reaction of the public has been amazing. People stop to say how happy they are to see us caring for this little patch, how they enjoy it changing with the seasons. Several local people have spoken about how looking out on the plants over the last year has helped their mental health. I do think the regular presence of the gardeners (in this case volunteers) has made a difference as well as the actual garden. People feel the care.

With no watering after the first few weeks last year, this fairly dense perennial planting has coped well with the hot, dry summer and people have now started to ask about this too.
Great work by the SBC team!

So this is where I have escaped to if I'm not at my desk working on your project 😉
A radiant fistfull of sticky marmalade marigolds mixed with the sharp peppery scent of nasturtiums. I'm all good to go now for a day of designing 🧡

This could be the perfect garden for our sunny summer! All planting and landscaping were fitted around the existing mature but rather lifeless garden. A few months on and it is bursting with life, and who wouldn't want to paddle in that glorious wildlife pond created by Calum Gordon?

This is also what we do! Jayne, Fiona and Iona are all busy bakers and plant growers and the local community allotment group is an important part of our life outside of work. Groups like ours are so, so important in every community. We learn from eachother, meet people of all ages and circumstances, support eachother through struggles with heaĺth, loss and family, celebrate and laugh together, perhaps speaking for just 5 mins on the way to their plot can change someone's day for the better. Sometimes we disagree 🤣 but navigating that is also part of living together. All of this happens every day, pretty much unseen and unheard by social media.
So, wherever you are, have a great weekend together and if you are near Doune, come along to the allotment group plant sale! 🍰☕️🪴

This is the gravel garden we planted last August working with an exciting list of plants from . It has gone through a little snow and a huge amount of cold rain since then. Its a west facing bed and the wall (and perhaps the woodland behind it?) seems to have offered some protection as the relatively few plant losses are more towards the front of the bed. As expected, little visible growth yet, but we trust roots are finding their way down into the 30cm + of fine gravel. The weather, as often happens here, has switched suddenly from cold rain to prolongued sun and wind, for which these plants should be very well adjusted.
Mercifully little for the hard working gardeners Cammy and Jude to do in this bed so far and we are all excited to see how this progresses

Here's one we made earlier....
Great to be here when the garden is just waking.
And today a little plunge into Loch Tummel too 🌊

Everywhere I work this week we are thinking about the loss of Nigel Dunnett. This garden is no exception, his influence is everywhere and his legacy in joyously abundant ecological planting will live on in so, so many gardens and garden makers.

Thank you Fiona and for another good day, bringing some bee-friendly, joyful, cottage garden colour to this garden.

An afternoon in London, exploring the oasis of gardens and landscape behind and . I love the criss-cross of railway lines, canals, paths, bridges and pedestrianised roads here. Busy places, it seems, can provide both calm and energising spaces as long as we 1) remove cars 2) add trees and lots of other plants 3) re- use what's already there in imaginative ways.
There are challenges evident with the planting, some of which is reliant on irrigation and is struggling in the increasingly hot London summers, but that would be fixable with our developing understanding of using drought tolerant plants and thick gravel mulches, or even planting into waste aggregate. So much to celebrate and learn from in these urban spaces and you can see people having picnics under trees, playing with children, running, sitting calmly and listening to the birdsong.... Taking lessons home to Scotland (and hopefully some sunshine!)
