🚧 Thinking of building an extension, a new kitchen, or finally converting that loft space?
One of the most important decisions you’ll make isn’t just what you build, but who builds it.
Choosing the right builder can make the difference between a smooth, exciting project… and a stressful, expensive nightmare. 😬
Here’s how to get off to a good start:
✅ First, agree exactly what you want - plans, materials, budget, and timeline.
✅ Decide if you’ll hire one main contractor, or if you’ll manage the project and bring in different trades.
✅ You or your builder will need to organise trades for unregulated work like tiling, decorating, or flooring.
And yes - you CAN say no to cowboy builders. 🚫
Ask for references, check if they belong to a trade body (and confirm that they do!), and take your time. Don’t rush this part. It’ll save you time, money, and stress down the line.
💡 If you're new to the area or don’t have personal recommendations, trade bodies can offer reassurance. But not all are created equal - some do rigorous checks, others just charge a membership fee. Always investigate!
