A copper beech limb failure over a well used public footpath at the church in Lockington last week due to the excessive heat.
This is a phenomenon known as Summer Limb Drop, where, given the right mix of conditions, large limbs can split off without warning.
A very difficult situation to predict or to prevent, luckily on this occasion, no harm was done other than a broken fence rail.
We chipped the material that had been stacked by the client's gardeners, who had initially cleared the path and then removed some other split limbs, major deadwood and laterally reduced the upper crown over the path to reduce end weight and rebalance the shape of the tree.
