🔥 This is why an EICR should never be rushed.

A customer contacted me after noticing a burning smell and finding that some sockets had stopped working.

They told me an EICR had been completed only a few months earlier, but the previous visit had been very brief. Because they were still concerned, they asked me to carry out another thorough inspection.

Inside the consumer unit I found:

⚠️ Serious thermal damage around the connections
⚠️ Burned and degraded cable insulation
⚠️ A circuit conductor that wasn’t even secured in its terminal
⚠️ Several additional issues requiring attention

The consumer unit was installed under the stairs with stored belongings surrounding it. Thankfully, the customer noticed the warning signs before the situation became even more serious.

Electrical warning signs can include burning or fishy smells, sockets suddenly stopping, buzzing, crackling, heat or discolouration.

Never remove the consumer-unit cover yourself. If there is smoke or fire, leave the property and call 999.

This tethered charger was mounted neatly beside the customer’s parking area, making everyday home charging straightforward and convenient.

The charging lead stores around the unit when it isn’t being used, helping keep everything tidy. Once completed, the vehicle was connected to demonstrate the new charger working.

This weekend I installed a new SyncEV charger, complete with a dedicated EV consumer unit, surge protection and new EV charging cable.

One of the things I always try to pay particular attention to is how the finished installation looks. Wherever possible, I’ll take the extra time to conceal cables and find the neatest route rather than simply choosing the quickest option.

This customer wanted to get his home ready for his new electric vehicle, but the existing fuseboard was an older unit with no RCD protection and wasn't suitable for simply adding a new EV charging circuit.

We upgraded the installation with:

This customer contacted us after their existing EV charger developed a fault. On inspection, we discovered thermally damaged connections caused by loose internal terminals that had overheated and started arcing.

If left unresolved, this could have developed into a serious fire risk.

Rather than simply replacing the charger, we also upgraded the dedicated EV consumer unit to bring the installation up to current standards.
