We're pleased to share that the Draft for Public Consultation of the IET Electrician’s Guide to Domestic EV Charging Equipment Installations is now available.

Written by our very own Simon Ogborn, the guide provides practical guidance for electricians, designers and learners involved in domestic and small-scale commercial EV charging installations.

Complementing the IET Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installation and BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, this new guide brings together brings together the essential information needed to design and install EV charging equipment, including charging modes and equipment types, regulatory requirements, system design, electrical protection and earthing, certification, and documentation. It also supports the assessment, design and installation of private domestic and small commercial EV charging systems.

The Guide also covers key topics such as load management, open PEN conductor protection, cable sizing, RCD selection, PV and energy storage integration, and cross-pavement chargingβ€”explaining not just what the requirements are, but why they matter.

The public consultation is now open, providing industry professionals and anyone with an interest in domestic EV charging installations the opportunity to review the draft and submit their feedback through the DPC process. The responses received during the consultation will help contribute to the development of the final guide.

You can access the draft and take part in the consultation here: https://electrical.theiet.org/get-involved/consultations/draft-for-public-consultation-iet-guide-to-domestic-ev-charging-equipment-installations/

The 8th Edition of the IET Guidance Note 7 : Special Locations is now available to pre-order at https://shop.theiet.org/guidance-note-7-special-locations-8th-edition. Deliveries expected from the 17th July.

It is extra-special this year having been compiled, revised and edited by our very own Simon Ogborn.

With Simon’s involvement with JPEL/64 and the IET, you can always be sure Erudite have the most up-to-date, and technically correct, information available.

09/06/2026

Erudite Training, based on the outskirts of Manchester, is looking to recruit an additional tutor to teach electrical installation and associated CPD courses. We are looking for a candidate with a proven track record in the industry, but are willing to recruit and train those new to teaching, providing they have the right technical skills and the ability to learn to be an excellent tutor.

For those interested, please contact Alex Scott at [email protected], outlining your experience and any reason you feel you would be suitable to teach at Erudite.

Erudite have always been passionate about teaching the actual subject, rather than coaching for exams. We understand that not one of us knows everything, so it is important to recognise competence is a combination of knowing what you know and, just as importantly, knowing where more research will be required. Tutors at Erudite have the added advantage of working with Simon Ogborn, who has the privilege of sitting on JPEL/64 (Wiring Regulation committee) amongst many other industry involvements. That gives him, and thus all the tutors, access to experts in virtually every electrical field, and therefore any knowledge gaps can be correctly filled. There are many myths, in the electrical industry, and these won’t get repeated at Erudite.

Joe Cannon of the IET has published an excellent paper discussing the correct selection of switch-disconnectors, previously generally known as isolators, in DC power circuits.

https://electrical.theiet.org/wiring-matters/years/2026/109-april-2026/solar-photovoltaic-dc-switch-disconnector-selection-and-configuration/

The risks of selecting the wrong type and/or rating of switch-disconnector is a poorly understood topic, so please have a look at this paper if you are specifying for PV and or EESS systems.

Discover how to select and configure DC switch‑disconnectors for solar PV systems, including key safety criteria, performance ratings, and best practices for reliable photovoltaic installations.
