Exposure to carbon monoxide (CO) deprives the body of oxygen, which causes illnesses that can be mistaken for a cold or the flu. The longer someone is exposed to CO, the more severe their symptoms become, and at high levels, can be fatal.

Ensure you have a working carbon monoxide alarm in the same room as any heating appliance which does not run off electricity. Remember to switch off heaters and extinguish fires before sleeping to reduce your risk of fire or carbon monoxide poisoning.
