650+ screw piles. 50MW of battery storage. One very exposed Scottish hillside.

At the Overhill BESS project near Rothienorman, Aberdeenshire, RADIX supplied and installed a complete foundation solution for a major 50MW battery energy storage site.

Working through high winds, heavy rain and challenging rural conditions, our team installed more than 650 RDX EXT screw piles, together with a galvanised steel sub-frame supporting Powin Centipede batteries, MV skids, PCS units, a switch room and associated infrastructure.

With no concrete and no excavation required, the solution also meant zero spoil waste, reduced heavy vehicle movements and minimal disruption to the surrounding landscape.

A tough location, demanding conditions and another example of why screw pile foundations are so well suited to BESS projects.

Good QA depends on good data.

The PTM8000 Precision Torque Monitor gives ground screw installers an accurate, traceable record of installation torque, helping turn what happens on site into usable QA documentation.

Installation data can be captured against each pile, creating a clear record to support project sign-off, compliance requirements and the wider quality assurance process.

For contractors working on increasingly scrutinised projects, particularly where installation evidence needs to form part of the handover package, that record matters.

A 22.5-tonne skid needs more than a foundation that "should work."

At Attleborough Solar Farm in Norfolk, RADIX delivered a fully verified screw pile and steelwork foundation package for three twin MV skid areas on behalf of PACE — each supporting a 22.5-tonne central skid and two 5.5-tonne PCS units.

The foundation system combined RADIX 89mm Extendable Helical Screw Piles with custom PFC steel frames (152×152×23 UC, Grade 8.8 M16 fixings, hot-dip galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461:2022), designed for a 50-year design life.

Verification was central to the project. A T1 point load test on the 89mm pile system reached 120kN at 6000Nm torque, with static load testing, EC7 geotechnical calculations and structural checks combined to verify the final arrangement before handover.

The approach also reduced ground disturbance, excavation and spoil generation, and removed the programme delays associated with wet concrete curing — while giving the installation team flexibility to adjust locally around cables and services.

Foundation failure on a solar farm is almost never a gravity problem. It's an uplift problem.

Wind loading on a panel array routinely governs pile and screw design, particularly at perimeter positions, where edge effects can push uplift demand well beyond a simple whole-array calculation. Get that wrong and you don't get a dramatic collapse. You get a slowly tilting row, damaged module frames, and load quietly redistributing onto the foundations either side.

Ground screws are, in most cases, the right answer to that problem, high uplift capacity from minimal ground pe*******on, fast and weather-independent installation, and genuine performance in the poor or variable ground that solar sites often sit on.

But that argument only holds if capacity is proven on site, not assumed from a spec sheet. Two positions fifty metres apart can behave completely differently, and a brochure uplift figure is a starting point for design, not a substitute for measuring it.

It's why we built our own 30kN Solar Tensile and Horizontal Test Kits: field-deployable rigs that let a site team measure real tensile and lateral resistance before the array goes in, not after something's gone wrong.

Complex BESS projects demand precision from the ground up.

For the St Helens BESS development, RADIX delivered more than 1,000 screw pile foundations and steel beam supports, providing a repeatable foundation system designed around extensive underground services and infrastructure.

Using adjustable screw pile technology, the team maintained tight installation tolerances while reducing excavation, wet trades, spoil generation and ground disturbance. The result was a flexible foundation solution that adapted to changing site conditions without compromising accuracy.
