🛠️ Cold Deck Roofs: Understanding the Risks❄️

When it comes to roofing, the term “cold deck” refers to a type of roof system where the insulation is located below the roof deck.
Meaning, if you add insulation to the outer timber deck and cover it with another layer of OSB you have turned a warm deck back into a cold deck.
This can be effective, however, there are some things that have to be considered, especially regarding condensation.

Why You Should Avoid Covering Insulation with OSB:

1. Condensation Buildup: Cold air beneath the roof deck can lead to significant temperature differentials. When warm air rises, it can cool against the OSB, causing moisture to condense. This not only affects the roof’s integrity but can also lead to mould growth.

2. Structural Damage: Prolonged moisture exposure can weaken OSB, leading to rot and structural failures over time. This can be costly and time-consuming to repair.

3. Energy Efficiency Loss: Condensation can compromise the effectiveness of insulation, resulting in higher energy bills as your heating and cooling systems work harder to maintain comfortable temperatures.

Best Practices:

- Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation to allow moisture to escape.
- Use Vapour Barriers: Installing a vapour barrier can help mitigate condensation risks.
- Do not cover a warm deck with timber
