Record year for heat pump installs under Scotland's Home Energy Scotland scheme 🏡

The Scottish Government's Heat in Buildings progress report, published on 2 October, says the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan scheme installed more heat pumps in the past year than ever before. The report doesn't put a number on it, so we won't either.

What it means here in Scotland:
• Homeowners: Home Energy Scotland currently lists a £7,500 heat pump grant, with an optional interest-free loan and higher grant amounts for very rural postcodes.
• Funding is first come, first served and subject to availability, so it pays to check early rather than late in the financial year.
• Only heat pumps that provide 100% of your heating and hot water qualify, so system design matters.

Worth knowing: the scheme is for homeowners' own homes, so it isn't aimed at businesses or community buildings, and a funding offer is never guaranteed.

Thinking about a heat pump for your home? Send us a message and we'll talk through whether it suits your property, no obligation.

VAT has been taken off household electricity until 31 March 2027 ⚡

From 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, electricity in Great Britain that would normally carry 5% VAT is charged at 0%, and that includes Scotland. HMRC and Ofgem have both confirmed it. Gas is not affected and stays at 5%.

What it means here in Scotland:
🏠 Homes that rely mainly on electricity for heating and hot water will see a bigger reduction than homes that use mostly gas, as Ofgem points out.
⛪ HMRC says electricity used by a charity for non-business purposes can qualify too, so churches and community buildings should check their bills.
🏢 Whether it applies to a business supply depends on how the electricity is used, so it is worth asking your supplier.

Worth remembering: it is temporary, and it only lowers the price of the electricity you buy. It does not change how much you use, so on its own it is not a reason to make a long-term decision.

If you would like a realistic picture of how your own electricity use looks, and whether solar, a battery or a heat pump could make sense for you, send us a message and we will talk it through.

Churches, village halls and community clubs in Scotland: CARES funding for renewables is open 🏛️

The CARES Community Buildings Fund, delivered by Local Energy Scotland and jointly funded by the Scottish Government and The National Lottery Community Fund, offers grants of up to £80,000, covering up to 80% of eligible costs, to help non-profit community organisations cut their building's energy costs and emissions.

What it means here in Scotland:
• Village halls, community centres, sports facilities and faith buildings can all be eligible, as long as you own the building or have a lease running at least five years beyond the project.
• You need at least one core measure, such as an air source heat pump or solar PV. Battery storage and insulation can be added alongside.
• If the building is heated by gas or oil, that heating has to be replaced as part of the project.

Worth knowing: your organisation needs to fund the other 20%. Funding is allocated first come, first served, and the fund closes once it's fully allocated. Projects are expected to be finished and claimed by 15 March 2027. Applications need installer quotes, and MCS-certified installers must be used where the technology is covered by MCS.

If your committee is wondering whether your building could qualify, Local Energy Scotland's guidance is the place to start, and we're happy to talk through options and quotes with no obligation.

From tomorrow, there's no VAT on your home electricity ⚡

HMRC has confirmed a temporary 0% VAT rate on domestic electricity across Great Britain, including Scotland, from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. VAT on gas stays at 5%.

It arrives alongside Ofgem's new price cap, which goes up 4% from 1 October. Ofgem says most of that rise is down to gas, with gas bills up around 8%, while homes that don't use gas should see an increase of less than 1%.

So what does it mean here in Scotland?

🏠 If you already heat your home with electricity (heat pump, infrared panels or storage heaters), this winter's changes work in your favour.
🔥 If you're still on gas or oil, it's a sensible moment to look at the numbers on electric heating, based on your own home and how you use energy, not the headlines.
⛪ Churches and charities: HMRC says electricity used for a charity's non-business purposes also qualifies, so check your bills show the 0% rate.

Worth remembering: the zero rate is temporary, and it's for domestic and qualifying charity use rather than most business supplies.

Wondering how electric heating, solar or battery storage would stack up for your property? Send the SES team a message and we'll talk it through with you.

⚡️ Plug-In Solar Panels Are Coming to the UK — Game-Changer or Gimmick?

The UK Government is set to allow households to buy plug-in solar panels—low-cost systems (around £400) that connect directly to a standard socket.
