Traditional Barns & Beams

Traditional Barns & Beams Traditional post and beam timber structures, roof trusses and barn style outbuildings.

We evolved from one of Ireland's first on site mobile sawmilling business. Set up in 1992 by David Smyth, a former forest manager for the N Ireland Forest Service, the business seen an opportunity in traditional timber framing. The skills necessary have been honed over the years and we now offer a variety of products - roof trusses in oak, Douglas fir or larch. These can be supplied with structura

l calculations and drawings for building control if necessary. We have built a range of outbuildings - seldom are two the same - in both oak and DF as well as porches, lych gates, pergolas etc. With contacts in Ireland and France we can source oak and Douglas fir beams - green and air dried - in a variety of lengths and sizes. Mobile sawmilling is still very much a part of the business as is forest mensuration - this involves production surveys etc for both the Forest Service in N Ireland and the Forestry Commission in Scotland.

A three bay oak framed barn with dormer and first floor. Doors are ledged and braced also in seasoned oak. I would like to thank our client for having faith in our ability to deliver what he has wanted for quite some time. Big thanks to my good mates Bary (Baz) Cullen and Gary (Beef) Conroy - you two played a blinder. Four and a half days start to finish.

Our latest creation - large kitchen table. This was made using 85 mm French oak for the top and 120 mm by 120 mm oak for the legs. It took six of us to lift into the client's kitchen. The oak is full of character. Finish is Danish oil.

Welcome to the page of Traditional Barns & Beams. David Smyth was a forester with the NI Forest Service until 1992. He left and setup a mobile sawmilling business - one of the first in Ireland. Milling timber for both private clients and public bodies such as Coillte, The National Trust etc he gained a reputation for providing a good service and with his knowledge of forestry and timber soon branched out into other areas. A job for a private client, Mr John Giles, let to his interest in traditional timber framing and he started to develop this side of the business. With a small band of like minded people he now produces anything from a simple porch to large barns - all using traditional building techniques. The vast majority of the timber used is sourced locally, a lot of which is milled in house. We hope you will enjoy reading about our various projects and let us know what you think of them.
