Home Owners Guide - Ed 2 “Goals”
“If you don’t know where you’re going you’ll never get there”, planning is the key, like everything in life if we don’t plan we are just scrabbling our way to an outcome.
Knowing your goal for a project in the home is even more important, by setting a goal it allows you to manage the costs, style and visual outcome.
Here’s my go to list for setting those goals and knowing what you’re aiming for, the very same things I do when planning a project with a client.
1 - OUTCOME 🥅 _ At the early stages this can be more than one. Gather pictures, magazine cut outs, bookmark and save social media posts of things you like. This gives you a visual tool that’s easy and quick to reference.
2 - SAMPLES 🎨_ Get touchy feely with things, order samples of paint colours, furniture coverings, blinds and curtains. Bring these with you to shops and see how they match with things. These are really helpful for people like joiners and cabinet makers because they also help with showing you colours and features for fitted furniture like internals and ironmongry.
3 - TIME SCALES 🕰️ _ Not everything is “off the shelf” a huge part of any project for a home is time management (I’ll cover this in another guide) if you don’t know how long things will take to get manufactured and delivered you’ll never be able to set other things like decoration, carpets and installation of things. Be prepared to wait for things !
4 - DOES SIZS MATTER 📏? _ In some cases no but in most cases if the size and shapes not right it’s going to ruin the mood. Nothing worse than spending all that time searching for the right thing and then it’s really disappointing or just ruins outcome, to small and it can be lost in the space, to big and it can be to over powering and take away from what the overall outcome was becuase you can’t relax and move around. What works for some may not work for you because of your particular room layout.
5 - COSTS 💷_ All of the above actually helps with budgeting as well (again this will be covered in another guide soon). By doing all the things above you can start to get an understanding of what things are costing, if you need to wait a bit longer to save more for the project or you can actually save money and invest in other things for another area of the house.
6 - DONT BE SCARED 😱 _ It’s ok to ask for help ! You’re not going to know everything, like lighting for example so don’t be afraid to reach out and seek professional help. Things like this guide are free information which you can reference, but you can also reach out and pay for a consultation with someone like an interior designer that do things like give colour advice and give things like their “go to supplier lists” to help with the things above.
If you found this guide helpful bookmark it and save it for future reference, like wise if you know someone it might help becuase their planning a project now, mention them below in a comment or share this post on your story or page.
Next week’s guide “Ed 3” is all about budgeting and managing costs so make sure you’re following the page so you don’t miss out. Previous guides can also be found in the album “Home Owners Guides”
