Work Experience & Apprentice Intake 2026

Investing in the future workforce through apprenticeships remains a key priority for our business, both now and for the years ahead.

We are well underway with our 2026 apprentice intake and have already completed a number of interviews and on-site work experience weeks for young people looking to begin their careers in Civil Engineering across the region.
The work experience programme is an important part of our recruitment process. It gives candidates valuable first-hand experience of the groundworks industry before committing to a career path, while also allowing us to see their punctuality, attitude, attentiveness, and willingness to learn in a live site environment.
Our interviews and work experience weeks will continue throughout June and July across our sites, with successful candidates receiving offers ahead of college courses commencing in September.

We are also pleased to welcome:
* Apprentice Engineer Josh Ellison
* Groundworker apprentices Brandon Wilson and George Smith

In addition, we have secured Plant Operator apprenticeships for recently qualified groundworker apprentices:
* Callum Atkinson
* Joseph Kirtley
* Ben Herdman

This brings our total apprentice cohort to 25 apprentices.

A huge thank you to the Wyn site teams for hosting the work experience weeks and to our apprentice mentors for their continued support and guidance.

We would also like to thank the teams at Derwentside College, New College Durham and Capital 4 Training for their ongoing support with apprentice training and further education.

Investing in the training and upskilling of our people remains one of our key priorities in delivering business success. Over the past few months, we’ve worked closely with our training partners to ensure critical training has been delivered efficiently, both on and off site.

A special thank you to Stephen from Keir Safety Solutions, who has been instrumental in delivering a range of onsite courses including CAT & Genny, Banksman, Face Fit, and Emergency Spill Kit training. Looking ahead, we also have a programme of Abrasive Wheels, Manual Handling, and Fire Marshal training planned in the coming months.

We’d also like to recognise the fantastic support from the team at Rhino Training Ltd, who have been working hard delivering trade, supervisor, and plant NVQs, while also supporting us with maintaining our training matrix and managing our CITB training grant claims. A huge thank you to Fiona and Abbie for their invaluable support throughout.

Having reliable, knowledgeable training partners is essential in helping us maintain a skilled, compliant, and capable workforce that can continue delivering projects to the highest standards. We would highly recommend both Keir Safety Solutions and Rhino Training Ltd to anyone looking for high-quality training support.

The Wyn team are making excellent headway with the groundworks for Galliford Try’s St Helens Primary School in Hartlepool.

This new facility will provide students with a modern, robust, and energy-efficient learning environment, including:
* Infant and junior classrooms
* A dedicated SEND space
* Main hall and library
* Nursery and staffroom
* External hard and soft play areas
* On-site parking

With the concrete foundations now complete, focus has shifted to the installation of site-wide foul and surface water drainage over the coming weeks.

Our Supervisor Liam Barrie and his team continue to deliver the works to a high standard, maintaining a strong focus on health & safety while coordinating effectively with the Galliford Try team led by Project Manager Iain Briggs.

Well done to all on the great progress being delivered across the project!

We’re continuing to make excellent progress on the Newcastle University and Unite Students Castle Leazes student accommodation project in Newcastle, delivered on behalf of lead contractor Bowmer + Kirkland.

Since our last update in January, we’ve successfully completed the reinforced concrete pile caps, ground beams, and retaining walls for Phase 1 - Building 2. Our team is now advancing Phase 2 - Building 1 pile caps, maintaining strong momentum and keeping the programme firmly on track.
Site-wide foul and surface water drainage works are also progressing well, including the successful installation of the first attenuation tank.

With a dedicated team of over 65 skilled personnel on site, we’re consistently meeting key milestones and enabling follow-on trades to progress their works in line with the programme.

A huge thank you to our team for their continued hard work and commitment. We’d also like to recognise the efforts of our key supply chain partners, including Allan Oliver Reinforcement for their consistently high-quality steel fixing, Waterseal for their specialist waterproofing expertise, and Viacon for the design and supply of the first attenuation tank system - just to name a few.

Watch this space for more updates in the coming months.

It was a pleasure to be at James Calvert Spence College in Amble last week for their careers fair.

Operations Director, John Osborne, and Contracts Manager, Ben Cowie, represented Wyn Construction, setting up the careers stall and spending the day engaging with students from Years 7 through to 13.
It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the wide and varied career paths available within civil engineering.

The event was a great success, with strong interest from older students keen to explore careers in the industry. It’s encouraging to see such enthusiasm and reinforces why these events are so important.

A big thank you to the school staff for their warm hospitality and the smooth, highly organised running of the day.

Following the event, we’re excited to be arranging upcoming work experience opportunities, giving students hands-on insight while working on the new school development being delivered by Kier on the adjacent site.

We were pleased to facilitate two school site visits in partnership with Jodie Thompson at Durham Works and the Kier site team at the new Sunderland Eye Infirmary.
We welcomed Year 10 students from Elmore Hall School for an engaging and informative experience. The visit included an overview of the project, insights into careers in construction and a guided tour of the site.
Students had the opportunity to see the hard landscaping works being delivered by Wyn, along with a sneak preview inside the building and a trip up to the roof, where they enjoyed impressive views across the Sunderland skyline.
A fantastic day supporting the next generation and showcasing opportunities within our industry.

Project Update - St Aidan’s Catholic Academy, Sunderland

We’re delighted to share continued progress on the St Aidan’s Catholic Academy project, delivered in partnership with Bowmer + Kirkland.

Over the past few months, the Wyn team has been fully focused on delivering the reinforced concrete ground floor slabs for the first building. Thanks to meticulous planning and hard work on site, all key pour dates have been successfully achieved — keeping the programme on track and enabling follow-on trades to begin right on schedule.

A special mention to our Contracts Supervisor, Gary Ellison, who has led from the front with an unwavering commitment to safety, quality, and timely delivery. A fantastic effort — thank you, Gary.

We’d also like to recognise the excellent contribution from our valued subcontractors:
🧱 Matty Quinn Building Ltd (Blockwork)
💦 Waterseal (Waterproofing)
🔩 Allan Oliver (Reinforcement)

Phase one completion is now firmly in sight — a testament to the teamwork, dedication, and professionalism shown by everyone involved.

National Apprenticeship Week highlighted the construction industry and the wide range of rewarding career paths available through apprenticeships.
The week reinforced the vital role we all play in attracting talented young people into construction to help tackle the skills gap — now and in the future.

To support the initiative, our Operations Director, John Osborne, and Contracts Manager, John Abley, hosted the Wyn Construction stand at the open evening at Derwentside College. We were pleased by the strong interest in our Groundworker Apprenticeship, delivered in partnership with the college.

Since the event, we’ve received several enquiries from young people keen to learn more! We hope these conversations will lead to apprenticeship offers as part of our 2026 intake, building on our current cohort of 25 apprentices training as Engineers, Groundworkers and Construction Plant Operatives.

Thank you to Derwentside College for hosting another successful event. We hope to welcome new apprentice groundworkers to college this September.

Kier Supply Chain Awards 2026

It was a pleasure to attend the Kier North East Supply Chain Awards at the Crowne Plaza, Newcastle — a fantastic evening celebrating the outstanding projects delivered over the past year and the strong pipeline of work ahead for Kier North East.
The event was a great opportunity to connect with industry colleagues and recognise the collaboration that drives success across our sector.

A powerful and thought-provoking talk from guest speaker Anthony Hutton highlighted the importance of men’s mental health and su***de prevention, and the vital work of the Never Throw in the Towel Project in supporting people across our region.

The evening also raised over £2,000 for the Kier Foundation’s charity partner, Action for Children, who provide essential practical, emotional and residential support to vulnerable children, young people and families across the UK — a truly worthy cause.

To top off a brilliant night, we were incredibly proud to receive four awards:
• Supply Chain Health & Safety
• Champion of Social Value
• Project Supply Chain Award – NETPark Phase 3A
• Director’s Subcontractor of the Year

A huge credit to our site teams for their hard work and dedication in delivering Kier projects to the highest standards, and many thanks to the Kier team for hosting such an excellent event.
