Our office has recently received a number of enquiries asking whether we offer PV solar maintenance contracts. We want to be clear: these contracts are not necessary and, in many cases, are being misrepresented to homeowners.

Domestic solar and battery systems do not require ongoing service plans. They have no moving parts, no consumables, and very little that can be routinely “serviced.” In normal operation, systems either function correctly or they present a fault there is no in between. Modern inverters and batteries are self-monitoring, with built in diagnostics that immediately flag any issues.

This raises a valid question: what is actually being “serviced” under an annual maintenance agreement? Re tightening secured connections or visually checking system data does not justify the recurring cost without artificially creating work.

A correctly designed and installed system should operate for 20+ years with minimal intervention. Aside from a sensible periodic electrical inspection, something that can be carried out by the homeowner’s regular electrician there is no technical requirement for routine servicing.

In reality, many of these maintenance packages are structured to generate recurring revenue rather than meet a genuine technical need. Over time, the cost of such contracts can significantly reduce the financial return of the system itself.

If a fault arises, it should be addressed. If the system is operating correctly, no intervention is required.

The focus should remain on delivering high quality installations, not unnecessary ongoing subscriptions.
