🔥 MYTH #8: “THE GLASS ON A WOOD BURNER ALWAYS GOES BLACK.”

NOT ON A MODERN STOVE USED PROPERLY.

One of the great things about a wood burner is the view of a real fire.

And modern stoves are actually designed to help you keep that view.

Most have something called an airwash system — a clever feature that directs a controlled flow of preheated air across the inside of the glass, helping to keep smoke and soot away from it.

The result?

🔥 A clearer view of the flames and less time cleaning the glass.

Of course, how you use your stove matters too. Dry wood, the correct airflow and a good burning temperature all help the stove and its airwash system do what they were designed to do.

🔥 WE THOUGHT WE’D SEEN MOST THINGS… THEN WE MET THIS WALL.

Every wood burner installation presents its own challenges.

This one was slightly different.

The room we were installing into was once a secret WW1 am******on store — and the building had been constructed accordingly.

The external wall was around 600mm thick and heavily reinforced, designed that way for a fairly obvious reason: if the am******on inside exploded, the building needed to contain it.

More than 100 years later, we needed to get a flue through it.

And because of the route required, we weren’t drilling straight through. We had to go through that reinforced structure at 45 degrees — giving us around 850mm of heavily reinforced wall to get through.

It fought us.

We won.

And at the end of all that work is what the job was really about — a beautiful Charnwood Island III wood burner and a completely transformed room.

Because nobody dreams about flue routes, core drilling or reinforced walls.

They dream about this.

A beautiful stove. A real fire. A warm room. And that feeling you get when you finally have the wood burner you’ve been imagining in your home.

So if you’ve been looking at your own property thinking “I’d love a wood burner, but I don’t think it would be possible here” — don’t write it off.

🔥 MYTH #7: A BIG FIRE MEANS MY STOVE IS BURNING WELL.

NOT NECESSARILY.

It’s easy to look at a wood burner full of big flames and assume it must be working brilliantly.

But bigger flames don’t automatically mean better performance.

A modern wood-burning stove is designed to burn in a controlled way. Good combustion comes from getting the balance right between dry wood, the amount of fuel in the stove, combustion temperature, airflow and chimney draught.

Too much air can send heat straight up the chimney and burn through your logs unnecessarily quickly. Too little air can produce a sluggish, smoky fire and lead to incomplete combustion.

What you’re looking for is a lively, controlled fire with clear flames — not necessarily the biggest fire you can create.

And this is one of the things we spend time explaining when we hand over a new CleanBurn installation.

Because installing the stove properly is only part of our job.

🔥 TOTAL TRANSFORMATION…

This week’s installation in Pollok, Glasgow was a very different job from some of the installations we’ve shared recently.

This property already had a chimney — but that didn’t mean it was simply a case of connecting a new stove.

We carried out a complete rip-out of the existing fireplace, prepared and rebuilt the opening, installed a new stainless-steel flue liner through the existing chimney, fitted the new hearth and stove, and then tested and commissioned the complete installation.

It’s a good example of something we see regularly: every house is different, and the right installation starts with understanding what you’re working with.

Mention a wood burner and it’s easy to picture an old stone cottage, a big traditional fireplace and a roaring fire.

And yes — they look fantastic in that setting.

But wood burners have moved on.

Today’s stoves come in everything from traditional designs to sleek, contemporary styles that can look every bit as at home in a modern property.

And your house doesn’t need to have been built with a fireplace either.

With modern chimney systems, a wood burner can often be installed in homes with or without an existing chimney — giving you much more freedom over where the stove can go and how the finished room can look.

So whether you live in a 200-year-old cottage or a modern family home, don’t assume a wood burner isn’t for you because of the age or style of your property.

A few photos from our latest installation in Stewartfield, East Kilbride.

The stove is in. The chimney system is installed. And another CleanBurn installation is well on its way.

It’s not quite ready for the glamorous finished photos yet — there’s still decorating to be done and a beam to be fitted — but I actually like showing this stage too.

Because when you eventually see the finished room, most of the work that went into getting there has disappeared.

NO — THE REAL STORY IS VERY DIFFERENT.

You may have spotted some alarming headlines recently about proposed changes to wood-burning stoves.

Look beyond the headlines and there’s actually some positive news for anyone considering a new stove.

The proposals are aimed at raising emissions standards for new stoves even further — encouraging cleaner-burning appliances and higher standards across the industry.

And that’s a direction we welcome.

🔥 IT’S A DIRTY OLD JOB SOMETIMES…

This week’s little surprise was hiding behind an old fireplace.

Once everything came out, this is what we found.

It might not be the glamorous side of wood burner installations, but it’s all part of the job — opening things up, seeing what we’re actually dealing with and understanding what needs to be done before a new stove can go anywhere near the fireplace.

There’s a lot more involved than simply choosing a stove from a brochure.

And this is one of the things I want people to see about CleanBurn. I’m not just the person who comes to your house, carries out the survey and sends you a quotation. I’m hands-on and involved in the work too.

Some days that means talking through beautiful new stoves.

Other days it means looking like this. 😂
