I’m currently working on a 105-year-old Dutch barge called Liberty located Southdown Marina.

What makes her even more special is that Liberty isn’t her original name. Her old Dutch hull mark, L1542N, links her back to an earlier identity, believed to be Jorward. Over the years she has had several names and several lives, and is believed to have originally been an open-top working barge, even carrying cattle at one point in her history.

Although we don’t yet know whether she was directly involved in World War II, one thing is certain — this barge lived through the war. Built long before the conflict began, she would have already been part of the Dutch waterways during one of the most turbulent periods in European history.

Today, Steve and Kate are her current owners and are believed to be only the fifth owners since she was built. They are investing a huge amount of time, money and dedication into restoring this remarkable old Dutch barge back to her former glory.

Boats like this are far more than just steel and timber — they carry history, character and the stories of the people who have cared for them over the decades. It’s a real privilege to be involved in helping preserve a vessel with such a rich past.

A real privilege to be involved with a piece of Cornish maritime history.

In the coming week’s I’ll be carrying out restoration work on May Queen, a beautiful old wooden fishing boat currently at Southdown Marina.

May Queen was built in Looe in 1936 by Arthur Collings, making her nearly 90 years old. She is widely regarded as one of the UK’s oldest surviving shark-angling boats and has a strong connection to Looe’s proud fishing and boatbuilding heritage.

Being born and raised in Looe, this one means a lot to me personally. Boats like May Queen are part of the town’s history, and it’s a real honour to now be working on a vessel with such strong local roots.

Boats like this deserve to be preserved properly. They carry the marks of the men who built them, worked them and kept them alive through generations. For me, as a traditional shipwright, it’s always a privilege to work on a vessel with this much history.

The work I’ll be carrying out will be done with respect for the original boat, using traditional methods where required, carefully assessing the timber, structure, fastenings and any areas needing repair so she can continue to be enjoyed and admired for years to come.

I’m really looking forward to helping bring May Queen back to her former glory.

If anyone has old photos or memories of May Queen, especially from her Looe shark fishing days, I’d love to see them in the comments.

Another deck re-caulking job carried out this week at Southdown Marina.

The existing deck seams had started to open up and wear away in areas, so the failed caulking was removed, the seams were cleaned/prepared, masked up, and re-caulked using TDS SIS-440 Teak Deck Caulking.

TDS SIS-440 is a professional marine deck sealant designed specifically for teak and synthetic-style deck seams. It is a one-part, neutral-cure polymer sealant that reacts with moisture in the air to form a tough, flexible rubber compound. It is known for staying flexible, curing rapidly, having minimal sag and shrinkage, and offering strong resistance to UV, temperature changes, and chemicals. It also does not require primer when used correctly, making it a trusted choice for deck seam repairs.

Open or worn deck seams may look cosmetic at first, but they can allow water to sit and track underneath the decking, so keeping them maintained is an important part of protecting the boat long-term.

As always, it’s a pleasure working at Huggins Southdown Marina — the staff are always very accommodating and helpful, which makes jobs like this run smoothly.

For deck repairs, re-caulking, marine carpentry, or general boat maintenance, please feel free to get in touch.

Bit of a different type of job for us this week, but a very satisfying one to get finished.

We’ve been working on cladding this large shed/building, giving it a clean, smart timber finish and helping protect it from the weather for years to come.

It’s always nice to step slightly outside the usual marine work and put our carpentry skills into something different. Whether it’s boats, bespoke timber work, outdoor structures, or general carpentry, we always aim for a solid, professional finish.

If you’re looking for quality carpentry or marine work, feel free to get in touch.

Another marine job completed assisting Hoskin Marine SW with the fitting of this Volvo Penta saildrive.

It was a pleasure working alongside Luke on this one. He is a very professional and knowledgeable marine engineer, and it’s always good to work with someone who takes real pride in doing the job properly. His attention to detail and calm, methodical approach made the whole process run smoothly, especially in a tight engine bay where accuracy really matters.

This job involved carefully positioning, aligning and fitting the saildrive ready to work with the existing engine installation. Jobs like this require patience, accuracy and a good understanding of how everything needs to sit together in a marine environment.

It was great to assist Hoskins Marine and be part of getting another boat a step closer to being back on the water.

At Lozynski Carpentry & Marine Services, we cover a wide range of marine work, from traditional shipwright repairs and bespoke carpentry through to refits, upgrades and work closely with GD Electrical & Mechanical Services for all your marine electrical needs.

For any marine carpentry, refit or boat maintenance enquiries, please feel free to get in touch.
