From above, this Clayworth garden looks like one space. On the ground, it’s five.

That’s by design. A plot this size can easily become one long run of lawn without something to divide it up and give each part a job.

You can see it as you move through. Steps lift the dining area and the morning coffee spot onto their own level, the paving changes from one zone to the next, and a line of timber arches marks the walk from the dining area to the quiet nook.

Five zones that still feel like one space, not something stitched together.

A fire changes how long you spend outside.

It sounds simple, but the right heating element shifts how a garden gets used. Instead of heading inside when the temperature drops, you stay out. That’s the real value of building it into the design from the start.

There are a few different ways to approach outdoor heating, and the right one depends on how the space is laid out and how you want to use it.

A fire pit is the most flexible option. It can be positioned within a gravel or paved area, moved if needed, and works well in gardens where you want something that feels more informal and social. The corten steel bowl you can see here sits within a white cobble area and works as a natural gathering point.

A built-in fireplace or fire feature is a permanent part of the structure. It tends to suit gardens where there’s a defined outdoor room, a pergola, or a covered area nearby. It becomes part of the architecture rather than a freestanding element.

Either way, it’s worth thinking about heating early in the design process. The position, the fuel source, and how it connects to the rest of the layout all need to be considered before the build starts.

The bigger the garden, the harder it is to make it feel like one space. 🌿

This design has five distinct zones. Outdoor kitchen and dining, a patio seating area, an ice bath, a vegetable garden, and a wildlife pond. The challenge isn’t fitting them all in. It’s making sure the garden still reads as a whole once they’re there.

A lot of that comes down to materials. Sandstone and timber run throughout the design, so even as the spaces change around you, there’s a consistency underfoot and overhead that ties it together.

Zone placement matters too. The patio sits closest to the house, a natural first stop. The ice bath sits just off it, screened by planting but easy to reach. Further into the plot, the vegetable garden and wildlife pond feel like proper destinations. Places you go to, rather than just pass through.

Planting does most of the work in between. It softens the edges between zones, so the shifts feel gradual rather than abrupt. Level changes add definition without putting up barriers.

That’s what keeps it cohesive. Not one big open space, but five areas that each have a purpose and a clear route between them.

Porcelain is a great material. It looks sharp, it lasts, and the finish is second to none. It also demands precision at every stage.

Our team take pride in what they do. You can see it in the time taken over every cut, and in the way the joints and levels sit across the finished surface.

It’s the kind of detail most people won’t notice, which is usually the point.

What makes a garden feel connected from front to back?

At this Barnsley project, the front and back gardens were redesigned as one scheme.

Similar materials and planting appear throughout the property. They are not identical, but they are repeated carefully so the spaces feel related as you move through them.

Strong lines bring structure. Evergreen planting softens the edges. Anthracite pergolas and lighting carry the darker tones through the garden, balanced with warm timber and porcelain paving.

Each space has its own purpose, but together the garden reads as one cohesive design.

When a client gives us feedback like this, we know we nailed the brief.

In this project, we chose the sunniest spot in the garden for a relaxed lounge seating area – to stretch out those long summer days.

A leafy Wisteria canopy adds a touch of shade and privacy, while keeping the terrace open for an uninterrupted view of the stunning water feature opposite.

Whether it’s a morning coffee, leisurely lunch or an evening spent entertaining – the goal is always to spend more time outdoors.

Tucked away to the side of our client’s Nottinghamshire home, this partially enclosed dining terrace offers a year-round space for them to cook, entertain and unwind.

We designed and built a bespoke gazebo, featuring a clear corrugated roof, with the British weather in mind ☔ so that they could dine alfresco way beyond the summer months.

The integrated kitchen and use of natural wood blends seamlessly with the rest of the garden and is set off nicely by festoon lighting as well as a colourful mix of plants. 🌿
