Sometime I get asked "should we be worried about the cracks in oak?"

Short answer "No"

Remember wood is a natural material that moves and reacts to temperature and moisture.
The cracks that appear in green timber (fresh cut) are just it drying out. Structural timber is carefully selected so that where the wood cracks will not become a weakness.
As the wood dries out it will shrink, which when using traditional joints makes the joints stronger and pulls the whole structure together tighter.
If building with air dried timber, most of the cracks will have already appeared.
