Stills from a recent painted ash and lacquered oak fitted bedroom we completed last week in a Wimbledon Village apartment.

A relatively small space that needed considerably more storage, without making the room feel smaller.

The design was carefully considered around the existing space and colour scheme, with the new cabinetry designed to:

- Keep the room feeling open rather than overbearing
- Complement the existing bright colour scheme
- Make the space feel wider with the addition of the oak slatted panelling
- Provide practical overhead storage
- Combine drawers and cupboards to make the most of the available space

The result is a bedroom that feels light and open, while providing considerably more storage than the space initially allowed for.

It's a good example of what bespoke cabinetry is really about — finding a way to make the space work better, without compromising how it feels.

From a simple idea to something completely bespoke.

Sometimes the most interesting pieces of furniture start with a very practical problem.

In this case, the brief was simple: create a space for a beloved dog that was functional, comfortable and practical, that also looked like it belonged in the room.

The solution was a bespoke dog cage that doubles as a beautifully crafted sideboard.

From the initial conversation and understanding the client's requirements, through design, material selection and manufacture, every element was considered. The proportions, detailing and finish were carefully chosen so that the finished piece complemented the existing interior rather than looking like something that had simply been added to it.

The result is furniture with two purposes, seamlessly brought together in one considered design.

A comfortable space for the dog.

A beautiful piece of furniture for the home.

Rather than trying to make a standard size work, we can design the furniture around the space, the way you want to use it and the look you’re after.

We’ll work through the details with you, from the layout and materials right through to the finish, then make everything in our workshop here in East Sussex.

Last week at BNI it was Sam Littlejohn from Littlejohn Bespoke in the spotlight, and it was a real showcase of just how much craftsmanship goes into bespoke cabinetry.

Sam took us through his process, starting with a free site visit and design consultation, right through to manufacture in his own workshop and final installation, with customers only paying once they are completely happy with the result. He explained why material choice matters so much, working with solid wood, real wood veneers, premium MDF and decorative metals depending on what each project needs, and how every piece is designed to scale before a single cut is made.

The examples he shared were brilliant, from a clever under stairs storage solution that turned wasted space into a functional family area, through to bespoke kitchens, wardrobes, boot rooms and even a rather well-appointed dog crate. One kitchen he mentioned, a project quoted at around twenty five to thirty thousand pounds, sparked a good discussion in the room about the perception that bespoke work always means budget blowing costs. Sam was honest that it will never be the cheapest option on the market, but the gap is often far smaller than people assume, especially once you compare it properly against the quality and lifespan of a manufactured alternative.

What really came through was Sam's genuine enthusiasm for the work itself. He spoke about loving the detail heavy pieces, like a beautifully polished vanity unit made from sapele, and how no two projects are ever quite the same, which is exactly what keeps him interested five years into running the business.

A brilliant, visual spotlight from someone who clearly takes real pride in his craft. If you know anyone renovating, extending or simply fed up with furniture that does not fit their space, Sam and the team at Littlejohn Bespoke are well worth an introduction.
