I started my career as an apprentice gardener for Blackpool Borough Council (they were a centre of excellence for horticultural training at the time) and have spent my entire career in horticulure. I am fully qualified in horticulture through City & Guilds, National Certificate, RHS Certificate and spent 3 years studying at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh where I achieved the Diploma in Ornam
ental and Amenity Horticulture. I then worked in managerial positions for Fylde and Blackpool and from 1993 to 2018 was employed by Eastbourne Borough Council, for the main part as Parks and Gardens Manager finally taking voluntary redundancy after my final 5 years as a Senior Specialist Advisor. My group won externally validated quality awards for our work and I have a particular interest in wildlife and sustainability. We created pollen rich 'bee beds' for pollinating insects and won an award from Defra (bee champion status) for this initiative. We also were successful with awards through 'In Bloom', the Green Flag and were in the top four Council's in England for customer satisfaction for our parks and open spaces when this was measured as a performance indicator. There were several articles printed in professional journals in relation to the gardens of Eastbourne. I took the opportunity to leave my employer at the time of the latest restructure and my long hours sitting in front of a computer were exchanged for a return to the career I enjoyed so much. I set up a company, 'Gareth's Gardenscapes' and have not looked back since. It is wonderful to be using my horticultural knowledge again and working with my excellent customers and clients to achieve the finished standards of landscaping and maintenance they visualised. I look forward to working on many future projects in Eastbourne and the immediately surrounding areas and redesigning or restoring gardens to their former glory and maintaining gardens to highest horticultural standards.
