One of today’s sweeps 🔥🧹

This Capital stove came up lovely after a good clean and rotary power sweep today.

There was a fair bit of build-up inside the stove beforehand, and I always find these before-and-after shots strangely satisfying! A proper clean-up, chimney swept and everything checked over ready for the burning season ahead. 👌

We’re getting to that time of year now where the diary starts filling up with sweeps as people begin thinking about lighting their stoves again.

If yours hasn’t been swept since last winter, now’s a pretty good time to get it sorted before the colder weather arrives. 🔥

Another full fireplace transformation recently completed by Wickenden Chimney Sweeps, with all works carried out by us from start to finish. 👌

We took the original open fireplace and completely transformed it, new hearth, brick herringbone chambers, tiled breast, reclaimed mantle and the installation of this Monza Warwick Multifuel Stove.
The finished result has completely changed the room, and more importantly, it’s now got a proper working stove ready for the colder months ahead. 🔥

🧱 A little bit of bespoke work behind the scenes…

Not every fireplace chamber has to come straight out of a box!

These herringbone brick-slip chambers were made completely bespoke on site, individually setting out, measuring, cutting and laying each slip to create the herringbone pattern before pointing everything up by hand.

It takes considerably more time than fitting a standard pre-made chamber, but I think the finished effect is well worth the extra effort. 👌🔥

One of the things I enjoy about stove installations is being able to tailor the fireplace to the property and the customer's taste. Whether that's herringbone brick slips, traditional brickwork, reeded chambers, slate hearths or something completely bespoke, there's normally a way of making it work.

These are now ready to form the backdrop to their new stoves, I'll share the finished fireplaces once everything is installed! 🔥

🔨 Chimney Stack Repairs – Before & After

A cracking transformation on this chimney stack, and this one deserves a bit of a special mention! 👏

This was Ryley’s first full solo chimney stack grind-out, repoint and flaunch, and I’m genuinely very proud of how he’s done. He’s picking the trade up incredibly quickly, his workmanship is coming on leaps and bounds, and if he keeps going like this, his future is looking very bright! 👏🔥

The stack itself was showing its age, with deteriorated mortar joints, tired flaunching and failing mortar fillets leaving it exposed to the weather.

The work included:

🔹 Full grind-out and chimney stack repointing
🔹 New flaunching around the chimney pot
🔹 New mortar fillets
🔹 General repairs and tidy-up, leaving the stack secure and weather-resistant

And judging by the finished result, I think Ryley can be pretty pleased with his first solo one! 👌

Chimneys are exposed to rain, frost, wind and temperature changes all year round. Once mortar begins to fail, water can pe*****te the stack and potentially lead to damp, damaged brickwork and considerably more expensive repairs.

⚠️ THIS is why it pays to keep an eye on your chimney stack! ⚠️

I arrived at a customer’s property today to install some new chimney cowls and caps, but before fitting anything I spotted something a little more concerning…

One of the chimney pots has seriously deteriorated. A large section has blown away leaving a hole in the side, and even more worryingly, the pot has cracked almost all the way around its circumference. At this point, it’s pretty much hanging on for dear life! 😬
It might just look like an old chimney pot, but something like this can potentially cause a lot of damage.

If that pot breaks away or comes down in high winds, you're dealing with a very heavy piece of masonry falling from roof height. That could:

🏠 Smash roof tiles and damage the roof
🚗 Damage vehicles or neighbouring property
⚠️ Injure somebody below
🧱 Cause further damage to the chimney stack
🌧️ Allow water into the flue and surrounding masonry
💷 Turn a relatively straightforward repair into a much more expensive job

Chimney stacks are completely exposed to the elements all year round. Frost, rain, wind and age gradually take their toll on pots, flaunching, pointing and brickwork, and from ground level, deterioration isn't always obvious.

Catching problems early is nearly always cheaper and safer than waiting for something to fail.

If you haven't looked at your chimney stack for a while, it's worth keeping an eye out for cracked pots, loose or missing mortar, damaged flaunching, leaning pots or deteriorating brickwork.

☀️ Weeks of dry weather. Barely a drop of rain.

Lovely. Absolutely perfect. 👌

Then I look at today’s diary…

🏠 Multiple roof jobs
🪜 Basically spend half the day as high off the ground as possible.

British weather: “Say no more, mate.” 🌧️🌧️🌧️

And now it’s absolutely pi***ng it down. 😂

Could’ve done this yesterday.
Could’ve done it tomorrow.
Could’ve rained on literally ANY of the days I was chimney sweeping indoors…
But no...

Roof work day. That’s the one. 🤦‍♂️😂

Out with the old, and in with the older 🔥

A recently completed fireplace transformation, and this one was all about putting some proper character back into the room.

The old tiled fireplace was removed and replaced with a Victorian cast iron open fire, paired with an original Edwardian wooden surround supplied by the customer.

There’s something about original period fireplaces that modern reproductions just can’t quite match. After more than 100 years, these pieces are back doing exactly what they were made for, and they look absolutely at home in this room. 👌
Finished off with a new black granite hearth, which really sets off the cast iron and timber surround.

Definitely one of the more favourite installations I’ve done recently, and a great example of how the right fireplace can completely change the character of a room.
