🚫 One of our recent clients said their garden had started to feel like a game of whack-a-mole…

👀 Why a proper survey matters 👀

➡️ We were recently contacted by a worried client who suspected they may have bed bugs. They had noticed small biting insects around the bedroom, including near the bed, but unfortunately the photo was not clear enough for us to identify the pest confidently.

📝 Rather than guessing, we booked a survey 📋

🔎 On inspection, there were no signs of bed bugs. No spotting, no cast skins, no harbourages, and no typical bed bug evidence. Instead, the culprit was bird mites 🐦‍⬛

🪹 The source was traced back to a bird nest in the guttering above the bedroom window. The mites were entering through the window area and had even made their way onto the bed 🪹 >🪟> 🛌

Bird mites are tiny parasites that usually live in bird nests and feed on birds. When birds leave the nest, or if the nest becomes disturbed, the mites may move away in search of a new host. This can bring them indoors, especially through windows, vents, loft spaces, or gaps close to nesting areas.

Although bird mites can bite people, they are not treated in the same way as bed bugs. Bed bug treatments usually focus heavily on the bed, furniture, cracks, crevices and repeat treatments to target their life cycle. With bird mites, the key is to find and deal with the source, such as the nest, entry route, or nearby harbourage.

This is why identification is so important. Treating for the wrong pest can waste time, money, and stress and may not solve the problem, in some cases even making it worse.

⚠️ While situations like this are rare, they are a powerful reminder that rodent control is not just about stopping damage or nuisance — it is also an important part of protecting public health ⚠️

🐀😷 Rodents can carry and spread harmful pathogens through urine, droppings and contaminated nesting material. Hantavirus infection is most commonly linked to breathing in particles from infected rodent waste, especially when contaminated areas are disturbed.

➡️ Good pest control is about prevention as much as treatment: proofing entry points, removing food sources, monitoring activity, dealing with infestations safely, and making sure contaminated areas are handled correctly.

❗️If you find rodent droppings, nesting material or signs of activity, avoid sweeping or vacuuming them, as this can disturb particles into the air. Seek professional advice if you are unsure❗️

💔 This morning wasn’t the start to the day we expected... 💔

🦔 We came across a hedgehog on the roadside with an injured eye. We carefully got it to the vets as quickly as we could, but sadly, despite everyone’s efforts, the little hedgehog didn’t pull through 🦔 (Thank you to Help4hedgehogs and everyone at St Annes Vets for trying your best to save this little one)

It was a heartbreaking reminder that pest control is about much more than dealing with unwanted pests. A big part of responsible pest management is protecting the environment around us — including pets, birds, pollinators, and wildlife 🌍

Every treatment, every bait placement, and every recommendation we make should be done with care, thought, and respect for non-target animals.

In honour of this little hedgehog, here’s a simple garden wildlife tip:
Before using a strimmer, lawn mower, or garden fork, take a moment to check long grass, borders, leaf piles, compost heaps, and log piles.
Hedgehogs often shelter in these places during the day, and a quick check could save a life.
