It takes about seven years for someone to become an approved electrician in the UK. ✅
Next time you think about starting a DIY electrical project after watching a how-to video online, remember how long electricians study their trade to keep your family and your home safe. During the seven years, they go to school, have an apprenticeship, and gain hands-on experience as a journeyman electrician. Do you still think your 90-second video tutorial qualifies you to do electrical work? 😳
Becoming an approved electrician is a rigorous process that takes approximately seven years of education and work experience to complete.
An aspiring electrician in the UK must start their journey by completing an apprenticeship program, which takes about three to four years. During this apprenticeship, candidates learn the basics of electrical installation and maintenance work.
Following the apprenticeship, an electrician must next complete a Level 3 NVQ diploma or City & Guilds qualification in Electrical Installation. This will take another two to three years of study while gaining practical work experience at the same time.
After completing the NVQ diploma or City & Guilds qualification, the electrician must obtain an Electrician Gold Card. This would require filing an application form, high school certificates, the NVQ/City & Guilds qualification certificate and paying a fee. Finally, before being able to work as an approved electrician, an individual needs to have several years of experience working in the field of electrical installation. 🔨🛠
