🌈 NOT YOUR AVERAGE GARDEN PATH! 🌈

This entrance had definitely seen better days — the original steps & slabs were patched with cement, crumbling, and becoming a real safety hazard. 👷🏻‍♂️🆘

Our client came to us with a bold and exciting vision: - “ We’d really like a mini version of the famous steps leading to the Scotsman hotel”

Challenge accepted! 👍🏼

There was a lot of pre planing involved and it was crucial to not only find the right stone, but the right supplier. So a big thank you to Hutton stone for their support in bringing this project to life. 🤝

Now this once-forgotten path is a standout feature — beautiful, built to last and without that famous smell. IYKYK 😂

STOCKBRIDGE COLONIES!

Picturesque, charming, and a logistical nightmare! 😰

For decades, the stonework in these colonies have seen a mass of cement “repairs”. As you can see below, this old and patched up stone landing, was now becoming a stafety concern. 🆘

Although detrimental to stonework, cement has always been the cheaper and quicker fix. Add in the logistical fun of the colonies, it’s easy to see why proper restoration was rarely the preferred or realistic option. 🤔

After having no luck with a road closure and parking suspensions only able to cover half the street. (The wrong half) Luckily, our clients and their neighbours were super organised, helpful, and ensured no cars were parked on the day of the much needed stone delivery. 🙏🏼👷🏻‍♂️✨

CHIMNEY COLLAPSE IN HOWE STREET!! 😱

This is terrifying. It’s also the reason why it’s so important to carry out regular building inspections.

Then when defects are discovered, they should be rectified as soon as possible. This is where too many tenements drag their heals, hoping to delay the cost for as long as possible.

Thankfully, it looks like no one was hurt. 🙏🏼

To ensure a replacement blends well with the original stonework, it’s important to select the right stone.

For this project, we used Dunhouse Buff.

And thanks to our highly skilled masons, the decorative moulds and surface finish were perfectly recreated on-site.

The decaying stones were then carefully removed and their replacements built with lime mortar.

(Note: The new mortar shown is wet. This has now dried and matches the original mortar colour.)

FB it’s been a while…… ⏳

We’ve had a busy start to the year working on some really exciting projects.

Here’s one we recently completed in Belgrave crescent in Edinburgh. One of my favourite streets, so the pressure was on. 😅

No sweat for the team tho, as you can see they’ve done a fantastic job.

Although the stone decay was mainly surface level and not serious, our client opted for stone replacement over repair.

There’s nothing quite like sharply dressed sandstone. Our client was also keen to ensure the work lasted as long as possible.

Although lithomex can be a great cost effective option with an average lifespan of 10-25 years, sometimes longer when done correctly. 😉 Eventually it will detach and fall from the original stone beneath.

So here we have it, the perfect example of an NSR basement. 🤩

New window stones 🤩

Window stones play an important structural role within a building, so it’s important to be pro active when spotting any signs of cracking or decay.

If you didn’t know already, the centre stone within a window is called a “Mullion stone”.

On either side of the window, the short stones are called “Rybat stones” and the taller units are called “Jamb stones”.

Directly above the window is the “lintel” or “lintol”, and directly below is the window “sill” or “cill” 🤓
