DETAIL OF THE DAY

It may seem obvious but the way natural light and artificial light can change the feeling of a space can be quite significant and can really inform design decisions.

In these examples from our recently completed project in the grange area of Edinburgh, they show the difference between natural light and little ways to artificially light the spaces.

The first images have a subtly integrated led strip light fitted beneath the stair balustrade to downlight and wash the linear panelling and in the second the led strip is fitted above the picture rail in the new study to up light the area.

BEFORE > AFTER | Grade II Listed Property

A full house refurbishment and extension in Kent for clients we had previously worked with on a project in Edinburgh.

The project was a sensitive transformation of the historic timber framed Grade II listed property to resolve long standing entrance and circulation issues whilst opening up the home towards the impress gardens, designed by Andy Sturgeon Design

The new pitched roof extension sits comfortably alongside the original house, combining recognisable vernacular forms with contemporary detailing.

NEW PROJECT

Last week we surveyed a new project in the South of Edinburgh, a beautiful traditional Victorian stone villa that has been subdivided.

The clients would like internal alterations to the property to work better for them as well as extensive upgrade to the services. We’re looking forward to looking at the design for this project over the next few weeks and will keep you updated on the progress!

WARRANT GRANTED

We recently received the granted building warrant for internal alterations to unlock the plan for a mid terrace townhouse in the west end of Edinburgh.

These 3D visual renders illustrate the importance of the circulation in the space and with the limited space, shows how we can maximise the circulation space to also provide additional storage space as well as a desk nook to suit the clients needs for hybrid working.

ARCHITECTURE & THE FRINGE

We feel very lucky to live and work in Edinburgh, home of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Every August, historic buildings become theatres. Streets become stages. Empty spaces become venues. Temporary structures appear, disappear and somehow become part of the city.

That’s one of the things we enjoy about the festival season— seeing how creativity can transform the way we experience a place.

From permanent architecture to temporary interventions, the Fringe is a brilliant reminder that buildings don’t just provide a backdrop for culture. They can actively shape it.

DAY TO NIGHT

Animated 3D visual capturing the way daylight travels round these proposed new townhouses on the outskirts of Edinburgh and the way the building transforms from daytime into evening.

3D models and visuals help us understand the form, materials and lighting properties of a project and are a great way to help clients understand our proposals for their projects.

MATERIAL SPOTLIGHT | TIMBER

We really enjoy specifying timber and have done for many of our projects over the years. Timber is a great material for various reasons, some we have summed up here. Timber offers a combination of practical, environmental and aesthetic benefits.

FAMILY LIVING

Not all of our projects are extensions…

This flat alteration and renovation project in Leith was an interesting one, as you can see from the existing section and photograph, the primary living level was on the second floor. There was a large entrance stairwell split from the entrance, landing, access up to the second floor and separate access down to the utility.

We were employed by the clients to unlock the existing plan to better meet their family’s future needs. As a family of 5, they wanted to alter the house to grow with them as their 3 children start to get older. We also wanted to utilise the diffused natural light from the impressive stairwell.

FROM PEN TO… CONSTRUCTION

The form of this extension to this listed stone villa located in the Trinity area of Edinburgh evolved from the primary uses of the space. We have the dining area enclosed by glass, creating a greater visual connection with the garden and the snug seating area which is enclosed with solid walls achieving a greater level of privacy and sense of enclosure.

DESIGNING WITH PURPOSE

Whether we’re designing a home extension, renovating a listed building or creating a new build house, our goal is always the same: to design in ways that are practical and meet the needs of our clients as well as being beautiful spaces to live in. You don’t have to have one or the other.

A small compilation of our project in Newington with key brief notes and how we reconfigured the ground floor and added an extension to meet the clients needs and wants for their new home.
