Late Summer Heat Plant Care🌱🌳🌞

How to keep your plants healthy and hydrated during the hottest months of the year.

As the late summer heat arrives, it's important to take extra care of your plants to
ensure they stay healthy and vibrant. Here are some tips from our experts at
Edinburgh Tree Surgeons on how to care for your plants during the hottest months of the year:

1. Water, water, water: As the mercury rises, so does your plant's need for water.
Make sure to water them frequently and deeply, preferably in the morning or evening when it's cooler. Be careful not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot.

2. Keep them shaded: If possible, move your potted plants to a shady spot or add
some shade cloth to protect them from the sun's harsh rays.

3. Mulch it up: Adding a layer of mulch to your garden beds can help retain moisture
and regulate soil temperature. Plus, it can help prevent w**d growth!

4. Feed them: Summer is the time when your plants are in full bloom and need all
the nutrients they can get. Consider fertilising them regularly to ensure they have
everything they need to thrive.

5. Keep an eye out for pests: Unfortunately, bugs love the hot weather too. Regularly
check your plants for pests and take action immediately if you notice any damage.

If you need help keeping your plants healthy and hydrated this summer, contact
Edinburgh Tree Surgeons for our expert arboricultural services. We offer tree care,
pruning, and diagnosis, hedge care, ivy trimming and removal, tree surveys, and arboricultural training for
corporate and domestic customers.

Let us help you keep your plants thriving all
summer long!

📢VOLUME UP📢

Lots of bees buzzing around the laburnum outside our office today 🐝🌳

Few trees are more beautiful when in floral bloom than the laburnum with its glorious display of bright yellow pendulous clusters. How tragic then that it is often subject to complete root plate failure and early death. We are frequently contacted to perform emergency removals on this species.

Laburnum wood is great for furniture / decorative wood works due to its two tone wood, dark in the middle with lighter shades at the outside but sadly large pieces are seldom harvested due to the extent of the rot in the main stem. The trees fall over due to extensive root rot.

So what causes this root rot, and when the trunk is examined, there is also usually extensive heartwood rot? Well as it turns out there are two reasons for this. Like in human medicine infection can lower immunity and a secondary infection can finish the patient off. In the Laburnum case, research has demonstrated necrosis by the bacteria Diaporthe Eres can cause lesions on the bark (bark blistering and orange discolouration) and these lesions are then colonised by the fungus Schizophyllum commune, thus starting the decline of the tree.

What can be done to prevent this horror? In short: don’t damage the tree by bad pruning practices. Leaving large pruning wounds can allow the bacteria in. Usually when examining a dead Laburnum we find a large hole / wound on the main stem where either a branch has torn out, or more typically some ghastly tree pruning has occurred.

Don’t allow unqualified tradesmen near your valuable trees and shrubs.

Get in touch with us to come and prune them properly.
